!per MAYFLOWER INCREASINGS by Susan Roserspouse: >Winslow, John (1630 - 1683)!The record-book copy of the will of John Winslow merchant of Boston, dated 3 Oct. proved 12 Oct, 1683, remembered each son " of my three bothers; Edward Winslow, Joseph Winslow and Samuel Winslow; " the twosons of sister Susanna Latham decd (sic); "my only son John Winslow" under 21 years; wife Judith. His dwelling and land were to go to son John when he became 21; if John died while a minor, then to the sons of "my three brothers." Wife Judith was to receive one-third, and son John two-thirds, of the rest of all his real and personal estate. No probate or land records were located for Judith in Bristol, Plymouth or Suffolk Counties according to this volume. Savage in referencing his second marriage to Judith says he dies soon thereafter, and also attributes his known children to his first wife Elizabeth. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------ In a Packard genealogy she is referred to as Judith Smith. It is interesting to note that Jael Packard sister to John Packard also marries later in Taunton a John Smith in 1672. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------ How Many Winslows In The Colony? It is interesting to note that there were only five Winslow's coming to the new World between 1620 and 1650, so our potential for Judith's are reasonably finite. You could even assume 5 original Winslows x 5 children each =25 Winslows2 + 3rd Generation at 25 * 5 = living children each (times were tough) and still have only about 125 Winslows, about 25 to 50% of whom might actually be male and carrying the name Winslow. So, we have about 75 male winslows to have a female progeny by name of Judith, or an actual female in the balance named Judith. The Winslows: They were: Edward, Gilbert (Mayflower) John in the Fortune, Josias on the White Angel and Kenelm before January 1632/3. Scenario 1: Contemporary Male Winslows who might have fathered Judith. If she was married in 1688, Taunton, her latest possible birthdate would be about 1672, if we assume she was at the earliest -- 16 years of age when married, and died near 90 in Bridgewater in 1761. Given that there are no outstanding Chilton Winslow's (see other accounting) it would appear that the only other Winslow that could have fathered Judith would have been brother Joseph who had unnamed children alive at a time early enough for Judith to have married at a minimum age of 16 in 1688. John Winslow 2/Mary Chilton 2 Children: John Winslow 3 b. bef 1630 --m. bef 1664 Elizabeth, then Judith. Only one male heir, John 4, born 1669 (it is said by wife Elizabeth) No children by name of Judith acknowledged by MFIP. John 4 . b. abt 1669--too late for Judith, and did not marry until 1689, a year after Judith's marriage. Brothers Brother Edward3 All known children born too late to father Judith, the youngest male John, being born in 1661, and the only other male child Edward, being born in 1691. Savage mentions no Judiths, nor does MFIP, but Savage does mention "ano" d. whose name is "not in the fam. tradit. found, 31, July 1675." Brother Samuel3 (m. abt 1675, thus any child would have been too young for 1688 parenting of Judith. Brother Joseph3 Married ,it is believed, first, ________, bef. 1673, as he had two unnamed children living in 1673/4--ages unknown) he b. possibly abt1642. Another son Joseph was born in 1677, too late to have fathered Judith. He m. unknown wife, then 2nd wife by 1668. (Possible potential for Judith in the earlier two children) Brother Isaac3 Only one child Parnill mentioned in will and then unborn child (Isaac) who died within a month or so of birth. Unknown sibling3 Died before Judith's marriage date. Brother Benjamin3: Died unmarried bet 20 and 26 years of age. This then completes the known potential for Mary Chilton male descendants by the name of Winslow other than John3 who could father a Judith, and who would qualify as having the potential to have a child 16 years or more of age in 1688. Edward is a possibility via unnamed dau., as is Joseph with the two unnamed children alive in 1673. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- ------------------------------------ The Other Winslows: Gov. Edward Winslow (Josiah only son who survived to grow up had Edward who died young and Isaac who wasn't born until 1670--too young for Judith. No girls by the name of Judith. . ----------------------------- Gilbert (Returned to England aft 1st div. and died) Could have married and had children, but none mentioned. ------------------------------------ Kenhelm1 Male children were Kenhelm, Son Job and Nathaniel-- all born too late to father Judith--nor were any female Judith's noted as born to Kenhelm1. --------------------------- Josiah Jonathan, only son b 1638, daus, but no Judiths. Jonathan had John, d. young in 1676, married, no children recorded. ------------------------RECAP: While any of the Brothers to Governer Edward (other than John) had the potential to have fathered a Judith, none are to be found, nor do there appear to be any of the male Winslows who married a Judith, other than John3. While Elizabeth's and Mary's are frequent, as well as dau's named for their mothers-- this name simply doesn't appear more than once in Winslow anals thus discovered. In retrospect it would seem that Judith could only have come from a second or early third generation Winslows to permit her to be of age to be married in 1688. The Winslows tended to die young, and to have a preponderance of female offspring. So who is our Judith? We still don't know, but the signs thus far point to John3 as having the only available Judith! Scenario2: Judith, wife of John Winslow3, marries John Packard as widow! If Judith can't be found, one wonders, in high speculation, if the Judith that John Packard married was indeed Judith Smith--by marriage to John Winslow--Judith Winslow--who subsequently remarries after her husband John Winslow's death. The clunker here is that there are two apparent grave records for Judith, and the birth and date dates sure don't jive. MFIP (Chilton) assumes a possible birthdate for Judith1 Winslow of 1625 based on a death record in Boston of 1714 (not quoted) as being nearly 90 years of age. At the same time Bridgwater VR shows a death date of 1761 for Judith "Winslow" Packard and a burial next to John Packard in the graveyard. There is further mention in the B. VR that a private record by members of the Alden family substantiate Judith's death and burial. If we say that the Boston record could be incorrect, then John Winslow's 2nd wife Judith might have been far younger than it would seem, and could then be capable of marrying John Packard and having additional children. We do know, however, that she was still called Judith Winslow by her "step-son" John4 in 1690 in a will drawn prior to his departure for service in their "magesties" service." Scenario3: Judith Winslow is a "Winslow" by marriage to "any" winslow and simply remarries a John Packard. Scenario4: Scenario 1: Judith is Judith and she is dau of Winslow and Judith. He just fails to mention her in his will, because she is, after all, only a girl, and he has only one male heir, John. After all, he doesn't seem to mention dau. Elizabeth, either, nor Ann, who. "prob. d.y." according to MFIP. He may have simply assumed his wife would "take care of the girls," under the terms of her bequeathment. In fact, his first bequests are to the male children of of his brothers and sisters, then the balance of his estate to wife Judith 1/3, and balance to John 2/3rds. If all the girls are dead by now, well, they're dead, and Judith is a spook rather than an MD (Mayflower Descendant)! BTY we don't know exactly when he married Judith, though all children are by both MFIP and Savage, attributed to first wife Elizabeth, who was alive in 1670. If Elizabeth then died, he was abt 40 when they married and Judith 45, meaning she could have had a child, but not preferably or optimally. Scenario2: Judith is "everyman's" Winslow. She is a Winslow, but nobody claims her. She has, however, the goods--her name is Judith Winslow. So whether a Winslow by birth, or a Winslow by marriage, the Taunton historians at least called her a Winslow, rather than a Winsley, Winsly, Winslo, or Wensley. Scenario3: The clergyman who married John Packard was either knee walkin' drunk or functionally illiterate when he married the couple. Perhaps he thought it would be a pretty good joke to have a Packard marry a Winslow. The fact is, that he must have even fooled the payee's, cause several subsequent generations named their children both "Winslow" and Judith. By way of example, Joseph, son of John and Judith, had children named both John and Judith. He son Joseph had a Winslow Packard, mentioned by Mitchell as son of Joseph, son of John. And so forth.
