!MARCUS BURGESS, son of Norman and Ursula (Ewer) Burgess, was Born 18 July 1848 near Hustisford, Wisconsin. Married Emeline Sanborn 30 April 1875 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Marcus Burgess, along with four of his brothers, served in the Civil War. He was 15 years of age when he enlisted 5 January 1864 as a Union soldier with Company A, 3rd Regiment of Wisconsin under Capt. Ralph Van Brunt. {5'5", dark complected, black eyes and hair} With the end of the war in 1865, he was discharged in Louisville, Kentucky, on 18 July after 1 1/2 years of service. He was with General Sherman in the historic "March to the Sea." During this long campaign which began in Atlanta, Georgia, the 15th of November 1864 and ended 25 days later in Savannah, Georgia, Marcus Burgess "...contracted rheumatism caused by the hardships and exposure incidental to the military service ..." which in later years "...disabled him to a considerable extent from performance of manual labor." Other than this disability, Marcus Burgess, along with his brothers returned to Wisconsin. In 1869 Marcus moved with his parents to Linn County Iowa. In 1879, Marcus and Emeline Burgess migrated to Palco, Kansas, settling on a homestead. A few buffalo could still be seen, roaming the prairie. That area of Kansas between the South Fork Solomon River and the Saline River, about 45 miles northwest of Fort Hayes, was settled by many Civil War veterans. According to Roy J. Burgess, their youngest son, his father told of going to Fort Hays and on the way would pick up a load of buffalo bones which would buy a sack of flour. Marcus Burgess died near Palco 21 April 1911 and was buried at Palco. Emeline Burgess remained near Palco until 1915 when she moved westward again with her son, Roy, establishing a homestead 35 miles northeast of Arriba, Colorado, near sons Ray and Elmer, who had moved there earlier. About 1929 she sold her homestead and moved into Arriba where she made her home until her death in 1933. CHILDREN: i. girl, d.y. ii. boy, d.y. ** iii. Elmer Allen Burgess, b. 13 April 1878 iv.
