The Whale struck the boat at the bows with his head, with great force, throwing the young man who stood there ready with his lance, into the mouth of the Whale, which turned and made off with him. He was heard to scream by his father, who commanded the boat, as the fishes jaws closed about him. This son was Tully.

!EVEN NOTE Elisha served in the Revolutionary War. Between 18 August and 5 October CONT army. ELISHA CLEVELAND was born 7 January 1717 at Canterbury, Connecticutt. He married Ester Morse 26 June 1740 at Woodstock, Connecticutt. Ester Morse, possibly the daughter of Anthony Morse, was born in 1714 or 1715 and died 22 February 1742 at Woodstock. Elisha Cleveland remarried in 1742 with Ruth Paine in Canterbury, Connecticutt. Ruth Paine, the only daughter of Rev. Solomon and Sarah (Carver) Paine, was born 25 May 1723 in Canterbury. Ruth is Elisha's cousin. Elisha lived at Canterbury and at Nine Partners or Pastures near Amenia, New York, between 1755 and 1758. In 1769 in was in Landaff, New Hampshire. His residence was listed as Bath, New Hampshire in December 1773. At the first town meeting of Bath, New Hampshire, held 26 July 1784, the town records show that Elisha was chosen as one of the two hog reeves. Elisha served in the Revolutionary War. Between 18 August and 5 October 1777, he was with Capt. Hutchin's company, Bayley's brigade, Northern army. Later he journeyed to Nova Scotia; returning from that not too prosperous voyage, he went from Canterbury to his home, probably Bath, in bad health and low spirits. Afterward he settled at Pawlet, Vermont, as a farmer and mariner. Being active in his church, Elisha Cleveland was made a deacon 26 April 1775 in the Separatist Church. A new church was formed 15 April 1782 and he was chosen the deacon 20 May 1782. NOTE: ELISHA CLEAVELAND MARRIED HIS COUSIN RUTH PAINE CHILDREN: i. Peter, b. 9 Apr 1741 at Woodstock, CT; died 26 Apr 1741 only child of first marriage ii. Elisha, babtized 24 Aug 1743 at Canterbury iii. Martha or Patty, b. at Canterbury iv. Ebenezer, babtized 14 Sept 1746 at Canterbury v. Solomon, babtized 13 Dec 1747 at Canterbury; married Lucretia Owen; lived at Bath, NH, and both died when their daughter was 10 yrs of age. vi. Ruth, married Carver Merrill; died at Bath ** vii. Ester, b. 24 July 1754 [see note on Mark Sanborn] viii. Abigail, married James Beadle; died at Whitestown, NY ix. Sarah, b. 20 Feb 1761; died 9 Sept 1828 at Sweden, NY; married Reuben Stickney 1 Feb 1785 at Bath. Reuben s/o James and Eleanor (Wilson), was born 24 Jan 1761 in NH, died 7 Aug 1827 in Sweden. x. Elisha, b. 3 Aug 1762 at woodstock; died 28 Sept 1828 at Georgia, VT; married Mrs Hannah (Webber) Gardner at Bath. She was born at Bath, died at St. Albans, VT about 1835. xi. Eliphalet, b. either in Lebanon, CT, in NH or at Cambridge, MA; died 5 Sept 1814 at Bath; married 28 Sept 1780 at Concord, NH to Rhoda Barlet, b. 1766, died 10 Nov 1824 at Bath. Plymouth 1697; d. Plympton 20 Jul 1759 in her 63rd year. They lived in that part of Plympto which became Carver in 1790. The undated will of Isaac Wright of "Plimton", proved 7 Apr 1766, names sons Joseph and Isaac; daughters Mary Thomson and Rachel Wright.
