Jacob Riddle's will is dated June 9,1843. He mentions his wife Alethia to receive $400.negro man Jim Jackson, one feather bed and its furniture, a cow, 6 silver teaspoons, one loom and all the gear and slays and everything thereunto pertaining, a side saddle, bridle, iron-bound chest and one truck.

He gave his daughter Elizabeth Riddle a cow . All the rest of his estate real and personal he left to be divided into four equal parts. His son John Riddle to have one part, his daughter Elizabeth Riddle was to have one part and his grandchildren -the children of his deceased son Jacob Riddle to have a part divided among them and his grandchildren-children of his deceased daughter Eliza Riddle were to have one part divided among them. Son John Riddle was named Executor. The will was witnessed by JOseph I. Jones, Jacob T. Hall, John Harvey.

Renee was in third grade when Nora passed away . She was living with her daughter Mabel and Renee lived nearby in Ellicott City. Renee spent her afternoons talking to her great grandmother. One day, Nora asked for a mustard sandwich and some ice cold well water. They called Nora "Ol'Gal" Renee remembers her looking very small stuffed under covers.

>From memories of Barbara Scherer Rendina------As I remember her, she always had her long grey hair made into a plaited bun around the nape of her neck. A short heavy set woman, she always wore dresses and most of the time an apron.

We didn't see our granparents very often when I was little. Dad would somtimes borrow his brother's car and take us there overnight. An escape from our one bedroom apartment in Baltimore to the land of horses,cats,dogs,cows,pigs,ducks,chickens was a real treat for us kids and for my mother.

Life at my grandmother's was so different from life as we knew it. There was a well outside the kitchen door from which water was drawn and taken into the house for all purposes. On the kitchen table was bucket full of water with a dipper in it that anyone who wanted one could take a drink. Of course, we all did it over and over again--and no one ever got sick.

Grandma cooked on a big wood stove and also heated up her iron on it. The main room was the dining room. She had a big table we all sat around and she served meals in bowls that you could take what you wanted. In that room she had a buffet cart which usually contained all kinds of delicious buns left by her bread man.

There was a living room that I don't think was occupied very often. It was my favorite place in the house because it had the organ in it. I used to play that organ for hours. I don't remember ever being told to stop. Off of the living room was one of the bedrooms. It was where grandma slept. When we stayed overnight, we'd crowd in with Mary Jane upstairs and sleep on fluffy featherbeds.

In the evening one of my uncles would light a bonfire and we'd all sit around and toast marshmellows and hot dogs. Once I burned my hand and grandma put butter on it --a no no today!

Sometimes I would just like to walk around the farm. My uncles kept their coon dogs near the barn and I used to like to hear them bark. I liked to go out near the sweet smelling bushes; even today my favorites are bridal veil and lilacs.

When I was eleven my dad died. We moved to Uncle John's farm in Westminster so we didn't visit grandma's so much. Mary Jane had graduated high school and had gotten a car. They used to come to visit us in Westminster and then they stayed overnight with us. On those weekends, we ate lots of ice cream and cake and drank lots of cokes!

Mary Anne Riddle was born October 5,1892 to John Richard Riddle and Nora Anne Hart. She married Henry George Keller on October 11,1913 and had seven children, the eldest my mother,Ella. To me, Grandma seemed jolly most of the time. I remember my grandfather as being tall and thin. He seemed stern. They got divorced around 1950 and I never saw him again.

I didn't see my grandmother since that day in 1959 when I left for college. She died six years later. Since I know her from a child's point of view, I know she meant the world to my mother. She used to call me Barbry. If I could see her just once more I'd like to tell her I loved her. We never said things like that to each other in those days---maybe we should have.!

Mary Anne Riddle was baptized on October 17,1909 by Rev. E. A. Millcanis at St. Mark's Church in Catonsville,MD This was some 17 years after she was born.

Early on I do remember our grandfather. He was tall and thin and seemed stern. They divorced in the early 50's so did not visit us when our dad died and we moved to Westminster.

Henry George Keller was born on August 26,1888 . He worked at a mill. He lived among other places in Oella in Baltimore County. He was baptized at 1st Lutheran Church but converted to Catholicism on May 12,1912. He married Mary Anne Riddle on October 11,1913. Census reports also list that he was a maintenance man. The 1920 census states that he lives on Furness Bridge Road in Elkridge. Henry George and Mary Anne had seven children and lived on a farm on Montgomery Road in Ellicott City. In 1952, Henry George and Mary Anne got a divorce.

Henry George married a second time. Virginia Layner,born April 5,1899 and died in 1977 was a widow with three children. Her father was George Layner.

Henry George is buried at Woodstock at Meadow Ridge Cemetery.

Raymond had probably the happiest life of the four sons of Mary Anne and Henry George Keller. He was very happy with his wife Tinky and they have been married as long as I can remember. They had one child but it was stillborn and could have no others. Raymond sort of adopted many of the children in Tinky's family. They have always lived on Bonnie Branch Road in Ellicott City but also own a log cabin in the deep woods.

John was married several times. His first marriage in ca 1958 was to Margaret Frizzell. She was the widow of the man killed in an accident with John. She had two children when she married John, Georgia and Kim(male) Unfortunately, Margaret after being married to John for several years, was herself killed in a car accident with a truck. Georgia and Kim stayed with John and he married another woman which ended in divorce. He married a third woman and moved out of Maryland. He died of heart trouble.

When we were small, we all loved our Uncle John. He was the one who was mischievious and always played jokes or embarressed everyone. He once took me coon hunting. He let my mom and we children move to his farm in Westminster after my dad died. My mom stayed there about 10 years. After Margaret died, John changed to almost a different person.

John is buried at Mountain View Cemetery with his mother and brother Henry.

Mollie's obit was in the Sunspot.net. She died on January 17,2001. Cousin Evelyn and I visited the graveyard and saw her headstone in November,2000 but the date was blank.

I only remember seeing Aunt Mollie one time but it was memorable. My dad died and she and Uncle Jim came to Baltimore to help my mother though the funeral. I don't recall ever seeing either of them before or after this. My mother must have been close to them at one time.

Mollie and her husband James are buried at Mountain View Cemetery near Sykesville.

Dorothy Noreen Riddle was baptized at St. Mark's Church in Catonsville on September 26,1909 by E. A. Millcanis. The godparents were Francis Riddle and Nora O'Connor. . John Healy is the father of all of Noreen's children. They divorced and she remarried Doug Miller of Baltimore. Doug and Noreen were living in NC with John and his wife Jenny when she died. Although she wanted to be buried in MD she was laid to rest in NC

Noreen's granddaughter Renee said she lived in Ellicott City going towards Catonsville. There is a power station on the right and if you follow the lines up across Frederick Road and up to the top of the hill to the left you could find one of the houses. Another house is torn down. That house stood in a grove of trees on a hill right at Broken land Parkway and Rt. 29.

Renee remembered that in visiting one of the houses that her grandmother Noreen lived in as a child,her grandma told her that it was her and her sisters,Dickie and Mable's job to sit in the top window overlooking the field. When they saw the men folk coming up to the house for dinner they had to call out to Nora Hart Riddle ,their mother, that the men were coming in for their dinner. They often ate outside in the summer months on a long table in the back of the house.

Ella Nora Keller was born on October 14,1914 to Henry George and Mary Ann Keller. She was the eldest of 7 children and helped take care of her younger brothers and sisters. Her siblings were: Lawrence,Isabel,Henry,Raymond,John and Mary Elizabeth.The family lived on Montgomery Road with the mailing address of Ellicott City,MD As a result of helping out with the younger children and with chores on the farm, Ella did not have much formal schooling.

As a young woman, Ella gained employment as a maid for the Froelinger family. She only worked there a few years but must have been appreciated as Christmas presents came from that family at least 20 years after she left their employ.

There is a space in Ella's life that is a blank. She had a son and was shunned by her family. She placed her son in a orphanage while she worked for the Froelingers.

For some reason, Ella liked to go to the movies on her day off. One day, she went uptown Baltimore to the movies and a man was watching her buy her ticket. He bought a ticket also and found a seat beside her in the movie. They conversed a little before the movie. After the movie was over, they talked about it on the way out and the man asked if she would have coffee with him.. That started her relationship with Mahlen Robert Scherer.

Mahlen and Ella had two daughters together-Barbara Marie and Mary Joanne. Ella's son, Edward Vincent came to live with them before Barbara was born. There was not much money then and the family had a small one bedroom apartment at 31 E. Hamburg St. in Baltimore. Ella hated living in the apartment and hated living in the city. Living in the city was all that Mahlen knew!

Ella eventually regained her relationship with her family so she and Mahlen took their children to the Keller farm to visit occasionally.

Life was not really wonderful for them. They were poor and Ella was always intimidated by others. She did not work outside the home so the apartment was where she was every day.

In October of 1952, Mahlen was ill at work. He wound up in Veteran's Hospital with a diagnosis of stomach cancer. He only had four months to live. Mahlen and Ella had not gotten married and Ella was terrified. Apparently they had tried to do so before Barbara was born but for some reason could not. They did get married while Mahlen was in the hospital. Mahlen died on February 7,1953.

Ella's family was very supportive of her with Mahlen's death. In June of that year, Ella and her three children moved to her brother John's farm in Westminster.

I have only loving memories of my father. He was born on October 7,1899 in Baltimore. He was definitely a Baltimore boy--South Baltimore, that is. He lived his entire life there. I only remember living at one address: 31 East Hamburg Street. We lived in a one bedroom apartment on the second floor. We lived only a few blocks from everything important to Dad. Times were hard when I was a toddler during World War II. I can remember Dad coming home with things like sugar and Mom being very happy about it. Later I found ration tickets from that time among my mother's things. My earliest recollection of Dad was when Joanne was born. I can still hear Dad tell someone on the phone that one daughter so small she had to be put in an incubator(me), and the other could walk down the hall with him when she was born. Dad was on the phone a lot and many times I thought he was very important because he was speaking to men at City Hall a lot. Dad ran for city offices twice and lost both times. In 1946, he ran for Clerk of the Baltimore City Court and in 1947, he ran for City Council. He was a die hard Democrat and many of his descendants follow his example. My brother Eddie and I helped deliver his political flyers to houses in the neighborhood.

I guess we were very poor. Dad worked as a night watchman at Curtis Bay Quarantine Station. He probably came home with about $25 a week. We had a bathroom but no bathtub. We did not have a refrigerator so had to buy our meat and perishables daily. When I was about 7 years old I did the family's daily shopping as Mom did not leave the apartment much. We lived a few blocks from school and church, the Cross Street Market,the recreation center,Federal Hill and Dad's favorite haunt--Lindy's. Lindy's was directly across the street from where we went to school-Holy Cross. I went to Lindy's with Dad sometimes and I can remember playing in the spittoons. When we got to be of school age, Eddie and I were pretty much free to go where we chose around the neighborhood. We didn't do too much as a family but there were times we all went to the zoo or Carlins Park. Many happy family times came when Violet and Vernon visited. Violet used to come over and take us shopping or to Federal Hill. Vernon began to date his wife Louise and brought her over and we all loved her too.

We hardly ever saw any others of Dad's family. His mother died the year after I was born. Dad had a few brothers that lived in the neighborhood. When I was about 10, Dad's brother Earl and his wife Etta needed someone to watch their child, Nancy-so asked my mother. This was good for my sister Joanne because she and Nancy became playmates. We also saw Etta and Earl a lot because of this arrangement. Only a very few times we visited my mother's family in Ellicott City. Dad had no car so used to borrow his brother Eggy's car. They were very close I understand but I cannot remember him ever being in our house. We did see his brother Bill a few times.

Violet told me that Dad met my mother in a movie. He saw her standing in line and followed her to her seat and sat beside her. They spoke about the movie. When the movie was over, he asked her to go for coffee. I wish I knew more about their relationship but I don't. I couldn't say they were a overly romantic couple but Mom used to make Dad's favorite Sunday morning breakfast every week-cinnamon cake, steak and brown gravy.

Dad was forever my champion. When I was about 9, I was still made to wear dresses. I was a tomboy and played hard. Dad talked Mom into letting me wear shorts. When all the girls were starting to wear little heels, Dad took me to the store and bought me some. Of course, Mom made me wear socks with them so the effect was in vain. If I was late coming home from playing, Dad would always understand. The summer before Dad got sick, I had appendicitus. While waiting to go to the hospital, I was terrified. Dad pulled down his pants and showed me --his appendix scar! He visited all ten days that I was in the hospital and brought me romance magazines even though he knew Mom would disapprove,correctly so.

When Dad worked at night, we called him at work. One terrible night in October of 1952, he called and said that he fell off of a stool and was bleeding. It was the beginning of the end for him. He wound up at Veteran's Hospital with a diagnosis of cancer. I remember him asking my advice(I was eleven) as to whether he should go through an operation. He did but it was too late. He came home for about a week at Christmas and had to go back in the hospital. He died on February 7,1953 ----changing our lives forever.

He sold the truck and bought a motorcycle. When he ran out of cash he came home and was welcomed with open arms by his father. He met and married a woman named Eileen and had two children with her. He was a farmer and saleman for Woman's Home Companion. She worked in the Bottling Deptarment of Calvert Distilliary.He served in the army from 1943-December of 1945. I did not meet my Aunt Isobel until July of 2000. She was in her eighties but was as sharp as a tack. She visited me with her daughter Mary Agnes and son Francis. She and my mother had had an argument when they were young so the two families never got together. I found out that Aunt Isobel was my godmother. She is a small slender woman who still has her brown hair. All of us have the same blue green eyes.

She told great story after story of her days with her husband,Henry Resch. They traveled around a lot together all over the country. It seems Henry had a thing for antique clocks and they belonged to a club which sought out these old clocks. She had funny stories of Texas and of going down to the Carolinas. One time she saw a watch she wanted Henry to buy for himself for $160 but at that time he thought it was too much money. It turns out the watch was worth over $10,000.

Henry Resch and Isobel had three children:Mary Agnes who married Bob Spacek, Charles and Francis. They live all around each other in Howard County. Henry died a few years back so Isobel lives in a big house and Francis has an apartment in her house.

We didn't do a lot of talking about my grandparents or ancestors. I did find out where my mother got the idea to make us those flourbag slips when we were little. My grandfather Keller worked in a flour mill so they had lots of those bags lying around.

On July 20,2001, Isabel Agnes (nee Keller) of Elkridge, MD beloved wife of the late Henry F. Resch, loving mother of Mary Spacek, Charles H. and Francis J. Resch. Also survived by seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one brother,Raymond and sister Mary Elizabeth. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Ilchester. Interment Crest Lawn Cemetery on July 30,2001.
