Generation No. 1

1.  JAMES JEFFERSON² GOFF,SR.  (UNKNOWN¹) was born February 04, 1734/35 in Maybe Albany,New York????, and died January 06, 1834.  He married (1) MARY EUNICE JOHNSON* Abt. 1782, daughter of GARRETT JOHNSON* and JUDITH WATKINS.  She was born 1764 in Hopewell,Somerset County,New Jersey., and died Abt. 1794.  He married (2) CATHERINE CARRICO Abt. 1795 in Preston County,WVA(was not given proof), daughter of JOHN CARRICO??**** and MONICA HAGAN??****.  She was born Abt. 1764 in Charles County,Maryland, and died in West Virginia.

Notes for JAMES JEFFERSON GOFF,SR.:

James Goff came to Maryland with the family of Robert Johnson,and married his sister,

Mary Eunice Johnson,daughter of Garrett & Judith Johnson of Hopewell,New Jersey.

Garrett was the son of New Jersey's earlest settlers,

Rutger ("Rut Jansen" ) Johnson and  Anngetji Gerritt,who were pioneers in Somersett,New Jersey.

 

Garrett headed his family in the migation to what is now Garrett County,Maryland.

After death of their parents they moved  into Louidin County,Virginia and from there to they all left

and came established the settlement of Johnson's Mill Run in Barbour County,WVA,  and

recognized as the best of citizens.

 

Joseph Johnson,Governor of Virginia, and Andrew Johnson,President of the U.S.A.,were

descendants of this family!!!!!!

 

First settled in within the boundaries of Tucker County,near the Preston County,WVA line.

They were a very thrifty couple.  During the Indian disturbances their well kept home was visited

by the Indians and burned down and carriedtheir prized possessions away.

Shortly afterward he received another shock, his wife Mary died,from which he never recovered

and his misfortunes beccae a hand to mouth existance.

He bought a valuable tract of land,just within the line of Preston County,from a Mr. Jordan,in 1783.

He erected another cabin but did not put  the customary"Punchion" wood floor in and left the mother earth as the carpet.

 

He did marry again to Catherine Carrico,sister of Monach Carrico who married John Turton Goff.

"let it said" she did not approve of this simple life,but rather from her husband's dtermination that he

never provide the savages with another home and valuable appurtanances to destroy.

he lived a miserable life henceforward.

He had accumulated a bag of gold,which he kept buried in one corner from which he loaned money

to his needy neighbors with interest.

iv.NANCY GOFF, b. Abt. 1789, Monongalia Co.,WVA  (five kids); m. ROBERT CALHOUN, November 28, 1811, Harrison County, WVA; b. Abt. 1780, Monongalia Co.,WVA.
