Notes for JOHN TURTON GOFF****:

John Goff died while searching for daughter Tamar Goff who eloped with John Riddle.

He was a Sheriff in Harrison County,WVA, From 1800 until his death in 1803.

 

John T. Goff was appoined one of the earliest "Justices of the Peace" of Monongalia County,

West Virginia(was Virginia then) he was a very public spirited man,like his brother Salathiel ,

and continued to serve in an official capacity for hiscounty until his death.

 

He was preceeded by Cupp as sheriff,and accorded the place himself in the county in 1799,and

which he held until his death in 1803.  John Fairfax succeeeded as sheriff,like all his brothers,

he accumlated a considerable fortune,and his prominence infleunce as a leader was always felt

 on the frontier and civil affairs.  His wife and daughters had all the luxories they wanted and

lived in the Manner of a Virginia gentleman,and kept a number of slaves on his plantation,and

in contrast to his brother, James Goff & Catherine Carrico,they maintained a a considered

elegance in their household and appointments.

John Riddle was the first settler in Grass Run.  He was born in Virginia,not far from the present site of Georgetown,in the District of Columbia,on June 30,1778.

 

His family moved to the Cheat River in what is now Tucker county,WVA.

 

The date of his move from Randolp Co.,WVa,was probably after the "War of 1812"

 

Moved in 1831 to Grass Run,Ritchie Co.,WVA.

 

Later moved to Lewis Co.,WVA,and finally to to roane Co.,WVA where he is buried with his last wife,Hannah Drake Smith,where he died in 1843.

Abt. 1795 in Preston County,WVA  (was not given proof), son of UNKNOWN GOFF and UNKNOWN TURTON.  He was born February 04, 1734/35 in Maybe Albany,New York????, and died January 06, 1834.

 

Notes for JAMES JEFFERSON GOFF,SR.:

James Goff came to Maryland with the family of Robert Johnson,and married his sister,

Mary Eunice Johnson,daughter of Garrett & Judith Johnson of Hopewell,New Jersey.

Garrett was the son of New Jersey's earlest settlers,

Rutger ("Rut Jansen" ) Johnson and  Anngetji Gerritt,who were pioneers in Somersett,New Jersey.

 

Garrett headed his family in the migation to what is now Garrett County,Maryland.

After death of their parents they moved  into Louidin County,Virginia and from there to they all left

and came established the settlement of Johnson's Mill Run in Barbour County,WVA,  and

recognized as the best of citizens.

 

Joseph Johnson,Governor of Virginia, and Andrew Johnson,President of the U.S.A.,were

descendants of this family!!!!!!

 

First settled in within the boundaries of Tucker County,near the Preston County,WVA line.

They were a very thrifty couple.  During the Indian disturbances their well kept home was visited

by the Indians and burned down and carriedtheir prized possessions away.

Shortly afterward he received another shock, his wife Mary died,from which he never recovered

and his misfortunes beccae a hand to mouth existance.

He bought a valuable tract of land,just within the line of Preston County,from a Mr. Jordan,in 1783.

He erected another cabin but did not put  the customary"Punchion" wood floor in and left the mother earth as the carpet.

 

He did marry again to Catherine Carrico,sister of Monach Carrico who married John Turton Goff.

"let it said" she did not approve of this simple life,but rather from her husband's dtermination that he

never provide the savages with another home and valuable appurtanances to destroy.

he lived a miserable life henceforward.

He had accumulated a bag of gold,which he kept buried in one corner from which he loaned money

to his needy neighbors with interest.
