Pietro Rendina was born around 1870 near Ascoli Piceno in the Marche region of Italy.   Some documents of his son,Riccardo, also list the hometown of Pescaro del Tronto.  Many relatives of Pietro had already crossed the ocean to America by the beginning of the twentieth century.   Pietro came to America to New York Harbor with his son,Riccardo, aged 16  on January 16,1909 sailing from Naples on the vessel,Madonna .  They settled in western Pennsylvania where they joined relatives already there.  Pietro allegedly left his wife Theresa and other children in Italy, hoping to send for them when he worked for money for their passage.  Pietro and son,Riccardo found work in a mine. Alessio came over in 1913 with his cousin Ascenzio.    Alisso hurt his leg and worked for a tailor, eventually making that his life's work.  Pietro worked in mines around the Uniontown area of Pennsylvania until 1917 when he was killed in a mining accident so was never able to return to Italy or to see those he left behind.  He is buried in New Salem,PA.

Notes for RICCARDO (RICHARD) RENDINA:

Riccardo Rendina was born May 13,1894 near Ascoli Piceno in the Marche area of Italy.  Some later documents report he was from Piscaro del Tronto.  At the age of fifteen ,on January 16,1909 Riccardo, and  his father Pietro arrived in New York Harbor from Naples on the vessel,Madonna.  Cousins had come to America earlier so they eventually joined them in western Pennsylvannia.  He worked in the mines with his father until WWI broke out.  He joined the army on May 2,1918 and served in France.   After his time there Richard,as he had preferred to be called, was discharged from Fort Dix,New Jersey on July 7,1919.   He received a Certificate of Naturalization on December 4,1919.  On May 29,1924 Richard reinlisted in the army.  His serial number was 414792. It is not known where he served but he told his son Pete that he played football in Hawaii with the natives.   His occupation in the army was listed as a mechanic and taxi driver.  On May 23,1927,Richard received an Honorable Discharge from the army.  As an adult,Richard had black curly hair, dark brown eyes and stood 5 feet,5 inches tall.  He was a strong man, having worked in the mines long hours.  His hands were so chapped, they would bleed if he bent back the knuckles. When Richard came to America, he settled in Masontown,PA  One of his buddies after he was discharged from the army was Frank Eppolito.  Frank just happened to have a pretty recently divorced sister,Rose.  Rose was trying to raise three little girls and was about 20 years old when she met Richard.  They fell in love and married.  Richard treated his stepdaughters as he would his own.  It was not long before Richard and Rose had a daughter of their own.  Theresa was born in 1932.  Two years later, their son Pete was born.   Long hours working in the mine and the harsh conditions of life in Masontown caused problems in the family.  Rose left Theresa and Pete with their father and went to Philadelphia with the other three girls.  Richard took Theresa and Pete to an apartment on Main Street in Masontown on top of a restaurant.   Richard had a broken foot for a time after that so was able to look after the children.  When Richard went back to the mines,Theresa and Pete lived with their Aunt Katie and family in Martin and saw their father on weekends.  Richard used to tell Pete he could not wait until he was sixteen and could work in the mines with him.  Richard was a tough man.  He once pulled out his molar with a pair of pliers.  Another time, three men jumped him with a knife.  Richard had 100 stitches but he beatup all three guys.   Besides being tough,he was a man of integrity.  Pete and a friend found a pocketbook with $80 and promptly bought themselves wallets to put the money in and various treats.  When Richard found out, he took the leftover money and added his own to give the woman back her property.  After a year or so,Rose came back to get Theresa and Pete.  She had remarried and wanted them in Philadephia with her.  Theresa left with her mother but Pete remained with his father  for several more years.  Pete spent many happy days living with Richard.  After work and school,Richard and Pete would go to the local tavern to eat  and all the women there made a fuss over Richard's son.  When Pete was 11, his mother returned and Pete did go back to Philadelphia with her but left his father a note.  This was around 1945.  Theresa and Pete never saw their father again.  Richard did join the Loyal Order of Moose in Masontown.  He spent his last days in the county home in Uniontown,PA and died on January 13,1958 of an aneurysm of the brain.  He is buried in Sylvan Springs Military Cemetery in Uniontown.

Notes for ROSE EPPOLITO:

This biography is much more difficult to write since my perspective is personal.  I met Rose in 1966.  My husband ,Pete was moving his mother and Julie to her house on Arnold Street.  That day, like everytime we went to see her in the 30 years after that, her entire refrigerator of delicious food was placed on the table and you were expected to eat.  I had to learn to make her sauce as one of my first tasks. Her baking was excellent.  Her whole family would visit around Easter time to receive their personal Easter bread with hard boiled egg enclosed.  Besides her great skill in the kitchen, her housekeeping was impeccable.  She loved to have all and everyone visit her in her small rowhouse or sit on her front porch.  Rose was always pleasant and smiling in my company.   She spent a lot of weekends with us since she'd often babysit our son on Saturday nights.  If I had to pick out some things that are my best memories of Rose they would be:  giving my son her cat,Effie; going with me to see Elvis in 1972,and unknowingly drinking water out of the toilet when my son,as a toddler gave her a cup to drink.  She was a good sport and wanted to please those she loved. You often got a present when you went to visit her.   As I write the facts about her life, I am saddened that she seemed to be looking for contentment and never found it in four marriages.  Perhaps in the later years, while traveling  with her senior citizen groups and spending quality time with her children and grandchildren she found happiness.

Rose Eppilito was born May 1,1910 near Maple Sterling, PA to Joseph and Carmella Eppolito.  Joseph worked in the mines and also ran a boarding home for miners.  Carmella was an excellent seamstress but was somewhat pampered.  A lot of the work of running the boarding house fell upon the eldest child,Rose.   There were 5 children in all,Rose,Katie,Jimmy,Frank and Angelina.  Times were hard and families had to struggle in those days.  Arranged marriages were commonplace and Joseph arranged the marriage of his thirteen year old daughter,Rose to a thirty eight year old storekeeper,Samuel Intorre.  Rose was so innocent she took her dolls on her honeymoon.  She ran home to her parents after discovering what was expected in a wife, but Carmella made her return to Sam.  In the four years that followed, she gave birth to three girls, Carmella,Sandra and Josephine.  Rose was happy when Sam took her to Italy for a visit.  The marriage did not last though and by the time she was twenty, her brother Frankie introduced her to a handsome miner named Richard Rendina.  They fell in love and married around 1931.  Richard treated her little girls as his own.  Soon they had a girl, Theresa and a boy,Pete Eugene together.    Long hours in the mine for Richard and the struggle of raising five children caused this marriage to end also.  Rose ran dances in Masontown in those days.  She ran off

to Philadelphia with a trumpet player named Steve Fuchick.  She took her three oldest girls and left Theresa and Pete with Richard.  Rose and Steve eventually got married and had a son, Steven. After a few years, Rose went to Masontown and got her children to go back with her to Philadelphia.   Rose was in her early 30's with six children.  During the 40's, Rose worked in a whiskey factory and also in a munitions plant.   By the end of the 40's, Rose's oldest girls were getting married.   Right after Pete went in the Marine Corps, Rose's third marriage broke up.   Rose was a very attractive woman, and soon met and married Steve Klanoski.  At the age of 44, she bore her last child,Julia.  By that time, Rose was already a grandmother several times.  This last marriage lasted ten years.  Rose moved from Media,PA to an apartment in northeast Philadelphia with her daughter Julie.  Rose worked at a steakhouse to support them.  They soon bought a small house where she lived until age 76, when she had to have open heart surgery.  After the surgery which nearly killed her, she lived with her daughter Julie until she died ten years later on July 3,1996.  She is buried with her daughter Tootsie at Winonah Cemetery in New Jersey.
