*************************************

James was supposed to have been sent to manage the lands purchased by the family from Gallloway, Ireland.  And was sent with  his wife &  kids  to the new land.  He was from a distinguished French family, long the Mayors of Galoway.  They originated as a Norman family and immigrated to Ireland before 1400 according to a letter wrote by Joseph French of Louisville as per letter to Paula Russell,   [email protected]
But a book text says that he  was transported by Thomas Notley, along with 52 other adventurers who planned to settle permanently.

According to inventory of Luke Gardiner, taken in 1674,James French, was one of his servants on South Clement Island.  (I would like to find out if these are the same men or if they are two different ones.)

Notes for JOHN LAKE/ LEAKE****:

John Lake/Leake was an Innkeeper in St. Mary's County,Maryland.

Belonged to Church of England.

John Leake's wife Mary French's families were Catholic.

John Leake came over with "Lord Baltimore" but was not listed on his papers for the ship because he was a Protestant.  Lord Baltimore only recorded the people who were Catholic.

Will was made on-Jan 14,1731--Probated Oct 2,1731.

Will listed on same page  as John Redman's .

Listed as  Leake,John,  Innholder

Leonardtown,,St.Mary's,Maryland

John Leake came over on "The Ark and Dove" with Lord Baltimore's Catholic group when

Charles I gave him  the grant.

This was confirmed by John Gott, who researched the Lake brothers,Vincent,William,& John Lake came to Fauquire County,Virginia from St. Mary's County,Maryland.

They leased land from a Mr. Scott in Fauquier County,Virginia in 1754. As, we know, John stayed in Rectorstown,in Virginia and William Lake, went to Harrison County,WVA. And Vincent went to Chester's Gap near Front Royal,Virginia.

Apparently they had a fourth brother Richard Lake !!! who went to Ohio, and moved close to each other but did not keep contact with each other. There is a 1 acre plot in Lake Cemetery,in Mellon's Field in Fauquire County,Virginia.

The Lakeland Estate is currently owned by Senator John Warner's daughter who lives there.

John is a descendant of John Lake.
