After 1842
The passage of the Mines Act of 1842 meant that women and children under the
age of 13 years were prohibited from working underground. What effect did
this have on women, socially and economically? How was the law
enforced? How did families replace the income from the mothers, daughters
and sons who had previously worked underground?
