Post-1842 Introduction

After 1842

The passage of the Mines Act of 1842 meant that women and children under the age of 13 years were prohibited from working underground.  What effect did this have on women, socially and economically?  How was the law enforced?  How did families replace the income from the mothers, daughters and sons who had previously worked underground?

We are slowly adding new information to this site.  Though much is still under construction, please do check back often for updates.
