Ray A. Shields, 78, of 250 Hudson Barksdale Blvd. died March 3, 2000, in
Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care after a lengthy illness. A native of
Spartanburg County, he was son of the late George and Nancy Hammett Shields.
He was a member of Gateway Baptist Church and retired from Bigelow Carpets.
Surviving are his wife, Corrine Kimbrell Shields; three daughters, Arlene
Fowler of Campobello, Frances Allgaier of Sarasota, Fla., and Linda Varner of
Campobello; two sons, Carroll Shields of Spartanburg and Jack Shields of
Pauline; a sister, Elsie S. Scruggs of Green Creek, N.C.; a brother, Huey
Shields of Spartanburg; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a
great-great-grandchild. The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Sunday at Gateway Baptist Church. Services will follow at 6:30 p.m. at the
church, conducted by the Revs. Ray Stuart and Ben Mayo. Burial will be held at
11 a.m. Monday at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. The family is at the home of Ray
and Linda Varner, 355 Campobello-Gramling School Road, Campobello. Seawright
Funeral Home of Inman is in charge of arrangements.

Huey Winford Shields, 70, of 140 Shields Drive died March 13, 2000, at his
home after a lengthy illness. A native of Spartanburg County, he was son of
the late George Ellis and Nancy Hammett Shields. He was a member of Rainbow
Baptist Church, an Army veteran of the Korean War and retired as an auto
technician with the S.C. Department of Transportation. Surviving are his wife,
Guynell Newman Shields; three daughters, Ruby Thomas of Cowpens, Patricia
Pennington of Simpsonville and Melissa Williams of Spartanburg; a son, Graylon
Shields of Inman; a sister, Elsie Scruggs of Greencreek, N.C.; eight
grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends
from 7 to 9 tonight at Seawright Funeral Home in Inman. Services will be held
at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, conducted by the Revs. Wayne Walls
and J.B. Strange. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Spartanburg. The
family is at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to
Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Hospice Special Needs, 120 Heywood Ave.,
Spartanburg, 29302; or to Cancer Association of S.C., 4 Catawba St., P.O. Box
