James Harvey Strain was born in Marion Country, Indiana Dec 11, 1823 and died Feb. 26, 1901 near Montgomery City, Missouri.   He married Lydia Earsman or Arisman (b. Feb. 7, 1820) on July 14, 1842.  Together they had at least eight children:  Mary Meredith (Blackshaw), Joseph Marion, Sarah Jane (Bown), and Louisa Ellen (Worland), Nelson Clark, Nancy Anna, Margaret, and Charles Wilson. Nancy Anna and Margaret do not appear on the 1860 census and likely died in infancy.  Levi Strain and Joseph Strain of Marion County may have been his brothers.  His wife Lydia died around 1898.

His father may have been James Strain, born Dec. 25, 1784 possibly in North Carolina, and wife Louisa, born probably in South Carolina.
