James Strain was born 15 January 1815 in Tennessee.  On 24 December 1834 he married Anna C. Porter in Sangamon County, IL, and it is assumed that James was one of the sons of an older James Strain, who was enumerated in Sangamon County, IL, on the 1830 census.  Anna C. Porter was the daughter of Henry Porter, Jr., and Nancy Boles.  James and Anna Porter Strain were the parents of five children who were born before his untimely death on 14 March 1849.   Anna and her children lived with her widowed father in 1850, but she died in 1857, leaving four children:  a daughter age eight, twin sons age eleven, and a daughter age 16.   After their mother's death each child went to live with a different neighbor in Christian County, IL.  James and Anna are buried in Traughber Cemetery in Christian County, Illinois, and the information concerning their dates of birth and death are taken from their gravestones.  Their children were an infant son who died young, Matilda Strain, Aaron (twin) Strain, Dudley (twin) Strain, and Ellen Strain.

Sample 20902 was contributed by a great, great grandson of James and Anna Strain.  (Four transmission events).
