James Strain was born in Ireland in 1763 and settled in Pennsylvania in 1795. In 1821 he moved to Indiana and settled in Parke County near Rockville. He died on Dec. 4, 1844. His first wife is unknown. His second was Ann McDonald, b. 4/10/1773 d. 4/4/1852. James and Ann had 13 children, including James II, from whom the participant descends.

II was born in 1799 and died in 5/1/1881. He married Rebecca Dicks (Dix)
who died in 1884. They had 9 children.
