James “Jimmy” Strain was born in South Carolina April 24,1819 to Sarah D. and (Unknown) Strain.  Around 1830 he moved to Henderson County, Tennessee and married Nancy A. Hart Oct 24, 1846.  The couple moved to the area near Terrell, Texas in 1878, then to Bowie County, Texas in 1879, where James died in 1895. 

James's brothers & sisters included Dorcas Lenora Strain born Dec 8, 1829 in South Carolina, Charles T. Strain born May 20, 1832 in Tennessee, Sarah A Strain born Abt. 1834 in Tennessee, and others who died young.
