Peter Strain was born c. 1820 and married Rose Byrne in
Aghaderg Parish, Ireland, Feb. 13, 1844. The couple settled on his
family's lands in Creevy Townland, County Down. Several of Peter's
brothers and sisters emigrated to America in the mid- to late-1800's.
Some of their correspondence with family back in Creevy remains in family possession
to this day.
Some of Peter's children and
grandchildren also emigrated to America, and returned letters from New York
City, Pennsylvania, and California.
It is likely that Peter was the son
of Murtagh Strain, who signed a deed for land in Creevy in 1824. This land
is still owned by his descendants.
