Osage County Chronicle, Sept. 27, 2001 (Transcribed by Cindy Marcell)
Gerald Marcell, MD, a family physician from Carbondale, KS was recently honored for 15 years of membership in the American Acadamy of Family Phicisians. The AAFP is the national medical association representing more than 93,1000 family physicians, family practice residents and medical students nationwide. It is the only medical specialty organization devoted to primary care.
The AAFP and the Kansas AFP recognize Dr. Marcell, and all of the long-term members whose many years of caring for and involvement in their communities have contributed to the prominent position family physicians occupy in today's health-care system.
The AAFP, founded in 1947, was instrumental in establishing the medical specialty of family practice in 1969. The organization pioneered the requirement that its members earn 150 hours of approved medical education every three years. This ensures that family physicians remain educated on the most up-to-date medical technologies, research and techniques.
People choose family physicians because they are trained to treat a broad range of illnesses from coughs, ear infections, prenatal care and well baby exams to chest pain, diabetes, and hypertension. Dr. Marcell has worked in Osage county since 1988 and has been located at the Osage Medical Clinic in Carbondale since 1993. Dr. Marcell is a Board Certified Family Physician. He and his wife, Cindy, and son, Wayne, reside near the Carbondale Overbrook area.

Gerald enjoys fishing, boating and swimming. He is an avid stereophile with a preference for Blues and Rock. He accepts medical students on a month long rotation during their 4th year of study up to twice a year. Often these student live in the Marcell's home and twice student's families have lived with them as well. Usually it is an eye opening experience for students as they are exposed to small town activities, life in the country with abundant wildlife in the yard as well as what it is like to work in a rural clinic practicing family medicine.

The Santa Fe Trail USD 434 board of education reconvened its meeting on Saturday, Aug. 20, to consider applicants for Position Four which was vacated by Mrs. Karla Green. Two persons representing the Overbrook attendance are were interviewed by the board. The two were Mrs. Cindy Marcell and Mrs. Wendy Ufford. Board President, Robert Cairnes, directed the interview process which took nearly 20 minutes for each candidate. Current board members asked numerous questions of each candidate and then gave deliberation to each. Due to the strength of each candidate, the board exercised three ballots before casting an unanimous vote to appoint Mrs. Cindy Marcell for a term to expire on June 30, 1995. Mrs. Marcell will take a regular seat on the SFT board effective with the Sept. 12 meeting.

Board President Robert Cairnes, gave this assessment of the selection process: "The board is very grateful for the two persons who have stepped forward to serve the Santa Fe Trail school district. It is a good sign for the district when the board must make a very difficult decision to appoint only one person. Both Mrs. Marcell and Mrs. Ufford worked diligently to assist in the recent school bond issue and both have demonstrated strong support for the directions of the future."
In the remainder of the meeting...

I appreciate the past board opportunities I have had to positively impact our educational system so as to help make our schools a better place for teachers to teach and students to learn." said Marcell.
"I look forward to future opportunities and challenges that support continuous improvement in the education of our children and community of lifelong learners" she added. (Note Cindy was elected to position no. 4 July, 1997)
Comments by Cindy - My first appointment to the board was an intimidating process, much harder in some ways than running publicly. The reason is all comments are of public record so as each board member made a vote and commented on their position it was to your face. I thought that was challenging to sit through; however I later went on to sit as board member on the opposite side of the table and had to make those same public decisions and comments on 2 occasions. Turns out sitting on the side of the Board was more difficult than as the applicant for me. I served for 7 years, but did not run in 2001 so I could have more time for family and other projects.

Jimmie Ray Schulze

Cynthia Schulze-Bent Marcell has certified copy of Jimmie Ray's Kansas birth certificate, #219 8581. It is for Crawford County, KS., Parent's residence: 108 E. Madison St., Pittsburg, KS. Sex - Male; Born fullterm; Legitimate birth; born on Oct. 21, 1940 at 2:45 am. Father: Paul E. Schulze, age 27 years old, birthplace: Pittsburg, KS., works as a Miner for Jack Mines; Mother: Morean Hoskins, age 25 years old, birthplace Dunkirk, KS., works as Housekeeper at home.
Note the form does check off "twin or triplet" & "If so - born 1st, 2nd or 3rd" but does not state he was a twin or otherwise and what the birth order was; also note if you include Jimmie's birth the number of children born of this mother should be 4 and none listed as born died. Per family stories it is NOT believed Jimmie was a twin or otherwise, probably the form was unfamiliar to the person filling it out and they checked marked areas inappropriately. The certificate states: Children born to this mother 4, born alive and now living 2 (should be 3 as Jimmie had 2 living brothers), born alive but now dead 1 (this child listed as dead prior to Edward Lee's birth as well), stillborn 0. Signed by Cleo Bell, physician.

Cynthia Schulze-Bent Marcell has certified copy of Jimmie's Kansas death certificate. Lists place of death as Leavenworth, Cushing Memorial Hospital, KS. Length of stay 5 days. Date of death 5/28/1967. It is known Jimmie initially was taken to Kansas University Medical Center in KC, KS; then later transferred to Leavenworth as he was not expected to live.
