Descendants of Richard SULLINSDescendants of Richard SULLINS

Generation Two

2. John2 SULLENS (Richard1SULLINS) was born circa 1739 at Great Britain. He married Jane GILL, daughter of Joseph GILL, circa 1762 at prob. Halifax Co., VA. He died circa 1808 at St. Louis Co., MO.

From 1760 to 1781 he appeared in Halifax Co., VA, records. In 1762 Richard SULLINS deeded to John 400 acres on Childress Creek. On 21 August 1766 in Halifax County, VA, Joseph GILL of Halifax Co. granted to John SULLINS of Orange Co., NC, for love and affection, 200 acres on the east side of Mayo Creek. In 1764, 1765, and 1768 he appeared on the Halifax Co., VA, election poll list. _The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography_, Vol. XIII, No. 2, October 1905, p. 208, "Virginia Militia in the Revolution," reported that on 30 May 1777, John SULLENS was paid 6 pounds, 3 shillings, for the wagon he leased to the government for use during the Cherokee Expedition during the American Revolution.

He appeared on the census of 1782 at Halifax Co., VA. From 1783 to 1794 he appeared in Rutherford Co, NC, records. He appeared on the census of 1790 at Rutherford Co., NC. In 1799 he settled near St. Louis, MO.

Recorded in 1808 in St. Louis Co., MO, property deed book vol. C, p. 446: "To all persons who shall see these presents: Greeting, Know ye that we Richard SULLENS, Peter SULLENS, John SULLENS, Nathan SULLENS, Abraham HILDEBRAND and Uri MUSICK, all of the District of St. Louis and territory of Louisana and lawful heirs of John SULLENS, late of said district of St. Louis, deceased, that for the love and friendship which we have towards our brothers Edward SULLENS and Reuben SULLENS of said district and territory. Inasmuch as for the last will of our father John SULLENS to us well known, do hereby relinquish unto the said Edward and Reuben, all and all manner of right, title, and interest that we have or may have had to a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in said district of St. Louis on River Fifi, and bounded as follows, to wit: northwardly by Absalom LINK and Samuel BAY, and westwardly by Jane SULLENS, southwardly by Richard SULLENS, eastwardly by Samuel BAY. To have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land containing 580 acres unto them the said Edward and Reuben and their heirs forever. In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals, this 24th day of May, year of our Lord 1808."

We probably should consider that John and Jane (GILL) SULLENS may have had a daughter, Wanna SULLENS, who married Thomas WARD on 3 April 1799 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Thomas WARD married Sarah SANDRIS on 25 Feb 1801 in Grainger Co., suggesting that Wanna (SULLENS) WARD died before 1801 (unless, of course, this was a different Thomas WARD). The connection to Grainger County is John Jr's marriage there on 4 Dec 1799. _Among My Pioneer Ancestors_, by Anna B. SARTORI, 1942 and 1950.

Children of John2 SULLENS and Jane GILL were as follows:

3. Nathan2 SULLINS Sr (Richard1) was born circa 1741 at Great Britain. He married Winefred (or Mary?) MAYS early to mid-1760's. He married Elizabeth METCALF on 2 Oct 1785 at Halifax/Pittsylvania Co., VA. He died circa 1805 at Tennessee.

There is NO DOCUMENTED LIST OF HIS CHILDREN'S NAMES. From Halifax Co., VA, Mortgage Book 6, p. 179-81, 31 July 1766, records: "Confirmed and by those present doth grant Bargain sell & lien release and confirm unto these Thomas YUILLE James MURDOCK & Company their heirs and assignes forever one certain tract or parcel of land containing one hundred Acres more or less lying and being on Mirey Creek in Halifax County being the same land which the said Nathan SULLINS had from his father Richard SULLINS which land the said Richard SULLINS purchased of Joseph SPRADLIN To have and to hold the aforesaid tract or parcel of land."

On 10 Sep 1767 for 45 shillings he was granted 435 acres on the branches of Polecat Creek in Halifax Co., VA, by King George III (recorded in Virginia Land Office Patents and Grants of 1767-68, patent #37, pp. 209-10; indexed as "Nathan SULLIVAN"). In 1764, 1765, 1768, and 1769 he appeared on the Halifax Co., VA, election poll lists; his name was recorded as "Nathaniel" in 1765 and 1768. In 1771 he appeared on the Halifax Co., VA, List of Tithables taken by Jas. TURNER Jr. The 1782 Halifax Co., VA, tax list shows 10 white persons in his household. The 1785 Halifax Co., VA, tax list of J. W. P. MARTIN indicates he had 11 whites in his household with 1 dwelling and 2 other buildings. He was a farmer. He lived after 1795 at about 2 mi. NW of present Oak Ridge, TN. _Recollections of An Old Man_, by Dr. David SULLINS in 1910. _Roots of Roane Co., TN_, by Snyder E. ROBERTS, pp. 167-69 in 1981.

Children of Nathan2 SULLINS Sr and Winefred (or Mary?) MAYS were as follows:

There were no children of Nathan2 SULLINS Sr and Elizabeth METCALF.

4. Josiah2 SULLINS (Richard1) was born circa 1743 at Great Britain. He married Lavinia WITT, daughter of Charles WITT and Lamina HARBOUR, circa 1767 at Halifax Co., VA. He died between 31 Jan 1773 and 19 Aug 1773 at Halifax Co., VA.

In 1767 Richard SULLINS deeded to Josiah 147 acres on Mirey Creek. (Richard had purchased the land in 1763 from Christopher SNEED.). In 1770 he appeared on a Halifax Co., VA, road order. In 1771 he appeared on the Halifax Co., VA, List of Tithables taken by Jas. TURNER Jr. On 5 Oct 1772 in Halifax Co., VA, Josiah SULLINS signed as a witness to the will of John JONES (b. 1725; d. 18 Nov 1773). He left a will on 19 Aug 1773 Halifax Co., VA, Will Book 1, p. 20. Josiah's will stated, "I leave my Brother John SULLENS Exr. as Witness my hand this 31st day of January 1773." John SULLINS, of Rutherford Co., NC, as executor of the estate of Josiah SULLINS, sold for 75 pounds to James JOHNSTON 147 acres [given to Josiah on 21 May 1767 by Richard SULLINS] on the north side of the South Fork of Miry Creek in Halifax Co., VA, money to be divided among Josiah's children. -- Recorded on 16 June 1785 in Halifax Co., VA, Deed Book 13, pp. 199-201.
