On pages 8 and 330: "Anthony Agee, son of Mathieu Agee and Ann Godwin, born in Virginia in 1719-27, the exact date of birth not known, and died there probably at about eighty years of age. ... On p. 6: "Mathieu Agee ... was born near Nantes, France, about 1670 ... he left France in 1688, went to Holland, and with some two thousand Huguenots, joined the ranks of William of Orange and accompanied his troop to England, where William dethroned the then Catholic King James, and assumed the duties of the Crown. In recognition of the aid rendered his cause by these people, William offered free passage to the new world to as many as wished to go, and free land grants to those who wished to till the soil. A large number of these French refugees took advantage of this offer. Mathieu Agee arrived in Virginia in 1690, received land grants west of Richmond and built a plantation about seven miles from the site afterwards chosen by the Huguenots where was founded the town of Manakin. Here was established a church, King Williams Parish, and Mathieu Agee was for a great many years a communicant there. This church still exists, and in October, 1936, a memorial tablet was placed in the church house by descendants of Mathieu Agee ... He married rather later in life than was usual to Ann Godwin, daughter of Isaac and Ann Godwin."

We next find him purchasing land in Sullivan Co., Tenn. and is taxed for 200 acres there in 1796; he witnessed deed for his father, Anthony, there in 1792. He moved into Scott County, Va., near his son, Lawrence, ca. 1830 and died there ca. 1834. He m. Catherine ---."

Lawrence Lay born in Burkes County and numerated in the Catherine Lay estate in Burkes County, no further record. The guardian for these Lay children was a Bradley and an Agee. Lawrence is supposed to have taken the Agee surname."
