- Mar. 1635, "John Washborne hath bought of Edward Bompass his house & palisado, standing of his late lote of ground which he had by William Palmers, beyond ye creeke called ye Eagls-Nest, which lote he gaue vp to ye company, for a lote of ground alowd him in an other place by ye Gouer then being; and ye said lote (of wch this house standeth) was, by ye consente of ye Gouer & Assistants giuen to ye said John Washborne. In consideration of which house & fence ye said John was to giue to ye said Edward a milch goate, wth an ewe-lambe; but for ye ewe lambe ye said Edward was to giue ye said John 35s in money or beauer, ye first of July, 1635, or for defalte of paimente he was to haue ye lambe againe. - 7 July 1637, "The Verdict or Order of thabouesaid Jury, prformed by them the tenth Day of May, 1637, and deliuered by them into the Genall Court held the vijth of July next after, and by the same confirmed in these words following, vizt: It is agreed, that the heigh wayes, both for horse, cart, and foote, shalbe as followeth: ... Also, we allowe a heigh way from the cutt betweene Willm Bassets & Francis Sprage, to goe to Ducksborrow towne; the heigh way to be continued from Willm Bassets garden or orchard, through John Washburnes ground, to Willm Palmers gate, as it now is, and so along through Peeter Browne ground, by the outeside of which we allow a way to the marsh, and vp to the woods; the way still to passe by Henry Howlands house, leaueing it on the east side, so keepeing the old way through the marsh to Mr Aldens house, and from thence through a valley wch leadeth to the corner of Phillip Delanoys feild, so to passe to Edward Bumpas house, and fourty foote to be allowed aboue his house straight to Rowland Leyhornes house, & so passinge aboue the house to Greenes Harbor path." - 2 Oct. 1637, "Lands to erect a house vpon and a garden place are graunted to Raph Goarame, of some pte of the waste grounds about Edmond Bumpas, or Phillip Delanoys house ... Fourty acres of land are graunted to Phillip Delanoy, lying on Duxborrow side, rangeing in length east and west, and breadth north and south, haueing the marsh at the farr end of Duxborrow lying on the north side, and the lands of Mr John Alden lying on the south side, the sea on the east side, and the lands of Edward Bumpasse on the west side: To haue and to hold the said lands to the said Phillip, his heires and assignes foreu, & to his & their pper vse and behoofe foreu." Robert Carver is graunted twenty acres of lands lying on the norwest side Greenes Harbor Riuer, and a garden place vpon Stoney Riuer, neere Edward Bumpasse, to be viewed & layd forth for him by Mr Collyer, Jonathan Brewster, & Wm Bassit, (wch lands are layd forth on the northeast side of Francis Godfrey, and vpon the same poynts of the compas that his are.) In reference to a petition prefered to the Court by sundry of the freemen, and in reference vnto a graunt made to some to looke out accomodations of land, as being the first borne children of this goument, and for the disposing of two seuerall tracts of land lately purchased, the one by Major Winslow and the other by Captaine Southworth, the Court, haueing viewed the seuerall lists of the names of those that desired to bee accomodated therin, haue settled it vpon those whose names follow:- ... - 13 July 1685, "Whereas we, whose names are vnderwritten, are apointed, by the towns of Duxbury & Marshfeild, to run the lines & settle the bounds between the townships of Duxbury & Marshfeild, as by the records of the said towns doth apear,- we haue accordingly run the said lines & setled the bounds as followeth: From the rocke that is flatt on the topp neer the house of Clement King, north west to the north riuer, & haue marked seuerall trees in the range, & about 12 or 15 rodd northeastward of Samuell Hacks house we raised a heape of stones, & from the said rock southeast to the cart way between Samuell & Seth Arnolds where we raised a heape of stones, & from thence to Greens Harbour, (fresh,) the path to be the bounds, & on the eastward side of said fresh, just aboue where the said way goes through it, we rayesed a heape of stones, & from thence on a straight line to a tree of white oake wth the topp broken of, called poles, which said tree stands by the cart way, just where an old foott path turns out of it towards Casswell, & between the said ways, & from thence on a straight line to the south west sid of Edward Bumpps lande, soe called, where he formerly liued, att Duck Hill, takeing in the said land somtimes the said Edward Bumppases to the township of Marshfeild, & these bounds aforesaid to be the bounds between the said townshipp of Duxbury & Marshfeild for euer more. In wittness whereof, we haue hereunto sett our hands the three & twentieth day of February, 1683 ... The aboue written is a true copy, transcribed out of the records of the town of Duxbury. MIGRATION: 1621 in Fortune, FIRST RESIDENCE: Plymouth, REMOVES: Duxbury, Marshfield by 1643, FREEMAN: Oath of fidelity, Duxbury, 1639 [PCR 8:182], EDUCATION: Made his mark to report of coroner's jury, 14 February 1654/5 [PCR 3:70] ... COMMENTS: ... As he did not have any recorded transactions after 1655, and his estate was not entered for probate, Edward Bumpas clearly spent the later years of his life on the lower end of the economic scale."

- 4 Oct. 1664, "Att the Generall Court held att Plymouth the 4th of October, 1664 ... Mr Joseph Tilden haueing complained to this Court that Edward Bumpas, Junir, is indebted vnto him in the sume of eight pounds and odd mony, as will appeer by bill vnder his hand, and a considerable pte of the debt lyeth vnder attachment in Goodman Holmes his hand, this Court doth desire that Anthony Snow, Leiftenant White, Joseph Bedle, and Thomas Doged, whoe haue bine by the towne of Marshfeild impowered to acte for the said Bumpas, or some of them, with the said Edward, to treat and issue with Mr Tilden in reference to his debt, that soe any further suites may be preuented; and the men aboue named, or such of them as shall acte in it, haue power to see such goods as are yett vnder attachment released for payment of the debt, and it shalbee the constables discharge." Nathaniell Winslow, of Marshfeild, complained against Mr Josepth Tilden, in an action of the case, to the damage of fifteen pounds, for vnjust molestation, in attaching of two cowes of the said Nathaniels for a debt of Edward Bumpas. Mr Josepth Tilden compalined against Willam Holmes, in an action vpon the case, to the damage of twenty pounds, for that the said Holmes, when hee was constable, receiued an attachment frequireing him to attach the goods of Edward Bumpas, att the action and suite of the said Tilden, which, although the said attachment was serued vpon cowes and other goods, yet the said Holmes neither deliuered the attachment vnto the said Tilden, nor made a legall returne vnto the Court therof, nor of what hee had done therin, wherby the said Tilden was made vncapable to enter his action, and to procecute for the recouery of the debt, which Edward Bumpas owed him. Edward Bumpas, for stricking and abusing his parents, was whipt att the post; his punishment was alleviated in regard hee was crasey brained, otherwise hee had bine put to death or otherwise sharply punished." On p. 121: Edward Bumpus (John), born at Rochester, 16 Sept. 1688, died at Wareham, 14 Nov. 1745; married 28 Feb. 1717/18 Martha Raymond (John, John), born Beverly, 11 Aug. 1692 (MD 4:71). After her husband's death she removed to Sharon, Conn. where she lived with her daughter; joined on 17 Nov. 1766 the church at Amenia, N.Y. Edward called the first town meeting at Wareham in 1739; was on the jury in 1743. Administration on his estate (Plym. Probate 10:64) was granted 12 Dec. 1745 to the widow Martha ... There were guardianship papers for Jedediah, James, Lois, and Elinor. ... in 1755 there were transfers of land to James from his sisters ... Abraham Jackson and Eleanor of Sharon, 19 Sept. 1755."

- 10 June 1662, "Att this Court, Thomas Bird, for comitting of seuerall adulterouse practices and attempts, soe farr as strength of nature would pmitt, with Hannah Bumpas, as hee himselfe did acknowlidge, was sentanced by the Court to bee whipt two seuerall times, viz, the first time att the psent Court, and the second time betwixt this and the fifteenth day of July next. And the said Hannah Bumpas, for yeilding to him, and not makeing such resistance against him as shee ought, is sentanced to bee publickly whipt, which accordingly was pformed. Mr Timothy Hatherley was requested and authorised by the Court to see justice done on the body of Thomas Bird by publicke whiping in Scittuate, according to the abouesaid sentance. And likewise the abouesaid Thomas Bird hath engaged to the Court to make payment of the full sume of ten pounds vnto the abouesaid Hannah Bumpas or her assignes, in pte of satisfaction for the wronge hee hath done her as abouesd." Leiftenant Perrigrine White, Mr John Bourne, and Ensigne Marke Eames, as celectmen of the towne of Marshfeild, and in the said townes behalfe, doe complaine against John Farrow and Willam Sprague, Senir, both of Hingham, in an action of the case, to the damage of an hundred pounds, for that the said Farrow and Sprague did this day conduct of bringe one Hannah Bumpas, a distracted pson, whose last settled residence hath bin att Hingham, in the collonie of the Massachusetts, for the space of one yeare or more, and is therby, according to an article between the confeaderate collonies, properly theires to maintaine, into the collonie of New Plymouth and towne of Marshfeild, and theire leaueing her, to theire great charge and damage, and to the hazard of the psons soe brought and left by them. The jury find for the plaintiffes, that the defendants brought Hannah Bumpas into the towne of Marshfeild, that was then an inhabitant of the towne of Hingham, fiue pounds damage, and the cost of the suite." - Bumpus, Carle Franklin, compiler, Bompass, Bumpas, Bump, Bumpus, and Allied Families, 1621-1981, rev. ed., 1985. On p. 46: John Bumpus, born 2 June 1636, died at Rochester, Mass., near 7 March 1715/16, date of inventory of his estate; married about 1670 Sarah --- whose parentage has not been found. She has been called Sarah Hunter but no such person was discovered. There is no record of her death but she was living on the date of her husband's will ... He took the oath of fidelity in Marshfield in 1657. On 1 May 1663 John Bumpus of Scituate ... In 1673 his name appears in Scituate as allowed and approved inhabitant and he was assigned a portion of common lands; in 1676 his house and barn were burned by the Indians. John moved to Rochester between 1683 and 1685."
