[Excerpted from the 16th edition of Burke's Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Landed Gentry, 1939.] On p. 2826, "Miller formerly of Bishops Stortford ... William Miller, of Stortford Place, Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire (reputed to have been eighth in direct descent from William Miller, of Petit Wales Mansion, Parish of All Hallows, London, b. 1366; who m. Johanna, dau. of John Rolph, of London, and d. 1432), left Great Britain for America in 1643, and settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts, later moving to Northampton, Mass.; fought in the Indian wars. He m. Patricia, dau. of William Bacon, and Martha Worcester, his wife, and d. at Northampton, leaving issue ..." [I have been unable to find any documentation of these alleged ancestors of either William or Patience that would link them to the New England couple.]
- Cutter, William Richard, New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial, 1913. In 1:422, "William Miller, immigrant ancestor, was a tanner and planter of Ipswich, Massachusetts, in 1638. In 1643 and 1646 he served as a soldier against the Indians. He resided in Ipswich in 1648, and in 1654 was one of the twenty-three original settlers of Northampton, Massachusetts. He resided on King street in that town, and died there July 15, 1690. He acquired a plantation at Northfield in 1672, and settled there, but returned to Northampton probably on account of the Indian war. He married Patience ---, who died, very aged, at Northampton, March 16, 1716. The Northampton records say that she was a skilled physician and surgeon."

He was at Ipswich 1648; was a first settler at Northampton; a tanner by trade. His wife was Patience; they had eight children, the youngest born Jan. 20, 1672. Mrs. M. was a skilful physician and surgeon, and was the only doctor at N. during the first two settlements."; "Physicians in Northfield.- Mrs. William Miller, during the First and Second Settlements"

In 1:5-6, 13, 18-20, 28, "In May, 1653, twenty-four persons petitioned the General Court of Massachusetts for liberty to 'plant, possess and inhabit Nonotuck.' These petitioners, with a single exception, residing within the jurisdiction of Connecticut ... 'To the Right worshipfull Gouerr ... request therein that you would be pleased to giue and grant Liberty to your petisioners ... to plant posess and Inhabit the place being on Conetequat Riuer Aboue Springfeild Called Nonotack As their owne Inheritance ... William Miller"; "Ten days had not passed after the date of the purchase, when a meeting of the planters was held, whether at Hartford or Springfield, is uncertain ... 'October 3th, 1653. It is agreed by the plantrs of Nonotuck ... that they shall be resident there [and] dwell themselues and ther families by the next Spring come ... William Miller'"; "The eight settlers whose names were appended to the original petition were ... William Miller ... Samuel Wright Sr., had a home lot of four acres, extending from King Street to the brook, bounded south on Main Street ... Joining Wright on the north was that of William Miller, extending from King Street to the (Market Street) brook ... In this vicinity was the place called 'Miller's Lion's Den,' so named in deeds.
