Isaac Popplewell, son of Hack Popplewell, took possession of his father's land grant prior to 1803. The land grant was issued to Hack Popplewell for services rendered in the Revolutionary War. The area of the land grant was in the Wolf Creek area of what is now Russell County but was at the time Adair County."

19 Mar. 1849, "Last Will of John Popplewell. State of Missouri, County of Andrew, the year of our Lord 1849, February the 24th. I consider myself in a low state of health and in Case I shall die, I want this to be my last will and testament, and do consider myself in sound mind enough to make a fair distribution of my property. I wish my widow to have all the property to use as she thinks best during her widowhood or natural life. I wish to have property enough disposed of to raise money sufficient to clear the land out of the office such as the family can best spare. I wish Vincent Wilson and Eli Joslin to attend to selling the property to raise the money and pay it into the office as the law may require. John Popplewell. Witness Berry Cawood, James Howard, John (his mark) F. Baly. In addition to the above will, I wish in case I do die Sary Popplewell, my widow to make Samuel McGown, a good and lawful deed to the north eighty of the quarter section of land that we now live on, according to Contract by the said McGown furnishing the said Sarah Popplewell the full amount of money that is required by law to enter the same, and at such times as the law may require. State of Missouri County of Andrew. In vacation of the Andrew County Court after February term, 1849. Be it remembered that on the 19th day of March AD 1849 before me, Edwin Toole, Clerk of the County Court, within and for said County on Vacation personally appeared, Berry cawood and James Howard whose names are subscribed to the within and foregoing instrument of writing, purporting to be the last will and testament of John Popplewell, deceased, and being duly sworn, upon their oaths state, that they subscribed their names to the said instrument of writing in the presence of said testator, and at his request as witnesses thereto: that the said Berry cawood signed the name of the said testator to the same at the request of the said testator in his presence and in the presence of the said James Howard, and which the said testator also pronounced and published as and for his last will and testament. The said Berry Cawood and James Howard further say that at the time the said testator executed the said instrument of writing they verily believe he was of sound and disposing mind and memory. Berry cawood James Howard which the undersigned considers sufficient to establish said will. In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed the seal of said County Court this 19th day of March 1849. Edwin Toole Clerk. Received for record March 19th 1849. Saunders, Gladys Popplewell, A History of the Building of the Village of Whitesville in Andrew County Missouri, 1976. "John Popplewell born in 1801 in Ky. came to Pulaski Co. Mo. from Russel Co. Ky. between 1837 and 1839, with his family, a son was born in Mo. in 1839, he lived in Platte Co., Mo. in 1842 and 1843 but came to Andrew Co. in 1844. He built a log house on land about 2 miles southeast of what was later the town of Whitesville. He was a Captain in the Missouri militia by appointment of the Governor of Mo. John Edwards, in 1845. He was also a Justice of the Peace."
