Ebenezer Smead (1675-1753) inherited his father's portion of the lot, to which he added the unimproved Nims parcel on the north in 1701. Ebenezer Smead may have built a house, or he may have lived in a house built by his father. In 1704 it was reported that all his family was spared, including himself, his wife, and four children, and there were no claims for property lost. Smead wrote his will in 1747, leaving 'the Homestead I now Dwell on with all the buildings' to his son Joseph (1713-c.1796)."

- McGowan, Susan & Amelia F. Miller, Family & Landscape: Deerfield Homelots from 1671, 1996. On p. 112, "Lot 25 ... Thomas Fuller ... and his wife Hannah, sold to William Smead (1635-bef. 1704) in 1674. In the deed, the lot was identified as 'the house Lott being the twentie fifth Lot in Number ... in that place Comonly called Pacomptuck nere Hatfield'. Godfrey Nims (d. 1704) was sold the north portion of the lot by William Smead and he owned it from 1679 to 1701. William Smead had built a barn on the south part, which was mentioned in town records on August 31, 1699. Smead died before 1704, according to Sheldon, and although no probate records are listed for him in Hampshire County, it is evident that his son, Ebenezer Smead (1675-1753) inherited his father's portion of the lot, to which he added the unimproved Nims parcel on the north in 1701."
- Melvoin, Richard I., New England Outpost: War and Society in Colonial Deerfield, 1989. On p. 153, "Deerfield was certainly a 'family town.' The Smeads provide a good example of this. William and Elizabeth Smead had helped settle both Pocumtuck in the 1670s and Deerfield in the 1680s. Seven of their children settled in Deerfield with spouses who were also residents. The Smeads thus tied together eight different Deerfield families. And the ties had further twists: Sisters Judith and Thankful Smead married brothers Eleazar and John Hawks, and Mehitable Smead married Jeremiah Hull and, after his death, Godfrey Nims - all men from Deerfield."; "On the winter afternoon of January 11, 1698 ... Sarah Smith secretly gave birth to an infant bastard daughter. Sometime later that afternoon ... Smith killed her baby. ... Hearing that Smith was ill, thirty-three-year-old Mary Allin went over to see her and found Smith in great travail ... Seeking out thirty-one-year-old Mehitable Nims and two of the older wives in town, Mary Catlin and Elizabeth Smead, the four returned to find Smith in such a condition that she had to have given birth already. They confronted Smith, but again she denied all, claiming only an ague, a sickness. This time Goodwife Allin lit a candle and searched the room until she found the corpse at the foot of the bed."
- Sheldon, George, A History of Deerfield, Massachusetts, 1895-1896. In 1:47, 2:301, "Smead, William, son of widow Judith of Dorchester, born before 1640 married in 1658, Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Lawrence of Hingham; was of Northampton, 1660. In 1674 he bought house lot No. 25 of Thomas Fuller, an original proprietor, where he built a house - perhaps the one now [1886] standing there - and where he died before 1704. He had ten children, and was probably the ancestor of all of the name in the country. His oldest son, William, born in 1661, was killed with Lothrop. His widow and three daughters were killed in the assault of Feb. 29, 1704."; "Smead ... William, s. of Judith (1), b. 1635; on the death of his mother he was put under the care of John Pope; Pope d. Apr. 12, 1646, leaving by will 'vnto William Smead my Little boy my Loomes and such tacklings as do belong vnto them which is to vallew of £3, provided he be willing to dwell with my wife after his time is out. Also provided he be willing to Learn my Trad, and that there be a comfortable Agreement mad between them afterwards.' How much William was benefited by this conditional bequest does not appear, but he is found in Nhn. and was made freeman in 1660; in 1671 he bought house lot No. 25; his name does not otherwise appear here bef. Philip's war, but he became one of the early permanent settlers; he d. bef. 1704. He m. Dec. 31, 1658, Elizabeth, dau. Thomas Lawrence of Hingham; she was k. 1704."
