8:  John Wilson, grocer and spirit dealer, was enumerated in the 1841 census of Ormiston in a group of three to four families located between Andrew Wilson (#10 above) and the manse.  In the 1851 census, David Slight, baker, was enumerated in roughly the same location.  David Slight had married Janet Wilson (#5), widow of James Wilson (#4), grocer of Ormiston.  When she died, the Haddingtonshire Courier identified her as grocer, baker, and spirit dealer.  The Ormiston kirk session records indicate that John Wilson moved to Inveresk the year after James Wilson arrived in Ormiston, and it seems logical that the grocery changed hands at that time.  That James Wilson was the son of John Wilson is conjectured, but the names of James Wilson's two children, John and Andrew, would conform to traditional naming practices (that the first son was named after the father's father, and the second after the mother's father).

56-57, 112-115, 224-227:  Patrick (sometimes Peter) Whitecross and his wife Alison Wood had eight children listed in the North Berwick baptismal records, every two years from 1746 to 1754, then again in 1760, 1762, and 1766.  Of interest here are sons John (1746), James (1748) and Peter (1754).  John was a witness at baptisms of two children of Peter, and one of our Richard Whitecross (#28 above).  Peter was a witness at the same two baptisms of children of Peter (so the witness must have been Peter's father Patrick) and one of James (was this Peter the father or the son?).  Richard was a witness at the same baptism of the child of James.  These four baptisms occurred between 1777 and 1782, and establish some sort of connection between Patrick Whitecross and our Richard Whitecross.  If we conjecture that Richard is the son of Patrick and Alison, we find his birth would fit nicely in the gap between 1754 and 1760.  Patrick's maternal grandfather was named Richard, as was one of his brothers.  Although the names of the children of our Richard Whitecross do not appear to follow a traditional pattern, his oldest son, born in 1782, was named James, which would then be the name of the brother who invited him to be a baptismal witness.
