John Matthews was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He entered the U.S. Army and served with Company A, 61st Pennsylvania Infantry, as a Corporal. At Petersburg Virginia, 2 April 1865, Corporal Matthews "voluntarily took the colors, whose bearer had been disabled, and, although himself severly wounded, carried the same until the enemy's works were taken." Matthews Medal of Honor was issued 13 February 1891. John Matthews died 24 October 1934 in Akron Ohio of arteriosclerosis. He is buried in Section 3, Lot 179. |
