The Zickau Family

Mary (Lindon/Linden) Zickau was born in Germany on March 15, 1849. She and her husband Charles Zickau came to the U.S.A. in 1886. They had seven children:

  1. Helen Zickau, born in Germany on January 6, 1876. In 1897 Helen Zickau married Richard Kirkwood in 1897. They were issued Allegheny County Marriage License Series C, Number 10076.
  2. Emma Zickau, born in Berlin, Germany on February 25, 1877. Emma Zickau married Joseph Holling in 1897. They were issued Allegheny County Marriage License Series C, Number 5020.

    In 1910 Peter J. (Joseph?) Haling was living with his family at 148 43rd Street in the 9th Ward of the City of Pittsburgh. Peter reported his age to be 37, his birthplace as well as that of his parents to be Germany. He reported that he had immigrated in 1892 and that he was a naturalized citizen. He reported his occupation to be "Millwright" in a "Furnace," possibly a blast furnace in a steel mill which were very common in Pittsburgh at that time.

    With Peter was his wife Emma, 33 years old, also born in Germany. At that time Emma and Peter had been married for 13 years and had 3 children, all of whom were living in the household.

    The three children, all born in Pennsylvania were:
    1.   Mary, age 12
    2.   Emma, age 11
    3.   Rosa, age 7

    Also in the home was Peter's mother-in-law, Mary Zickau, who reported her age to be 61 and her marital status to be a widow. She reported that she was the mother of eight children, seven of whom were living. Mary and her daughter Emma both reported their year of immigration to be 1886

    The Holling family later went to Florida.

  3. Annie Zickau was born in Germany on July 11, 1879. Annie married William Hazlett in 1900 They were issued Allegheny County Marriage License Series D, Number 4586.

    In 1900 Annie was living with her mother in in Tarentum Borough, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

    Mary Zickau was the Head of the Household. She reported her birthdate to be March 1849, her age to be 51 and her marital status to be widowed. She reported that she was the mother of 7 children, all 7 of whom were alive at the time. She reported her birthplace and that of her parents to be Germany. She reported her year of immigration to be 1886. She had been in the country for 14 years, and her occupation was listed as "Dressmaker."

    Also in the household were:

    1. Frank Zickau, age 18, Mary's son, born in Germany in August 1881. He reported his age to be 18 and his occupation to be "Apprentice - Bottle Blower." There must have been a glass factory nearby. Other occupations on the Census Table included "Laborer (Glass works)" and "Glass Cutter"
    2. Charles Zickau, age 12, born in Pennsylvania in June, 1887 whose occupation was "Carries Bottles (Bottle Works)
    3. Paul Zickau, age 9, born in June 1890 in Pennsylvania
    4. Annie Hazlett, age 20, born in Germany in June 1879. She reported that her marital status is married, that she has been married "0" years, and that she wa the mother of 2 children, both of whom were living. She reported her year of Immigration to be 1886
    5. Annie Hazlett, Mary's granddaughter, born in February 1898, age 2
    6. Otto Hazlett, Mary's grandson, born in March 1900.

  1. Frank Zickau shown to the right, was born in Germany in 1881. Frank married married Carrie Mankin in Ohio. Their son was Floyd Arthur Zickau, who was born in Ohio on May 13, 1905. Carrie is shown to the right in a photograph circa 1908 with Floyd and an unknown girl. Photos provided by Elda Ann Zickau Keefer
  2. Floyd A. Zickau (right) married Lola B. Ruckman (right), daughter of Moses A. Ruckman, and Mary Jane Hubbs born on May 21, 1869. Lola was born on January 17, 1900. She married Floyd on January 4, 1930 in Pennsylvania. Their children are:

    1. Patrica A. Zickau
    2. Lola Jane Zickau
    3. Jack Harold Zickau
    4. Elda Ann Zickau Keefer
    5. Linda M. Zickau

    Frank Zickau died in California on July 31, 1953.

    Floyd A. Zickau died on July 23, 1977 in Wayne Co., W.V.

  1. Rosalia Zickau was born in Germany on September 6th, 1884. In 1907, Rosalia married Frank Schimpf. Rosalia and Frank were issued Allegheny County Marriage License Series F, Number 24536.

    Rosalia and Frank's children, all born in Pennsylvania were:
    1.   Francis M. Schimpf, born about 1909
    2.   Carl H. Schimpf, B. Abt. 1912
    3.   Viola A. Schimpf, B. Abt. 1915
    4.   Rosalia A. Schimpf, B. 1917

  2. Charles Zickau was born in June 1887 in Pennsylvania and married Alice Trevenin circa 1926-1929. Charles later went to California.
  3. Paul Zickau, who was born in June 1890 in Pennsylvania married Anna Schmidt circa 1926-1929. Anna was born in Pennsylvania on November 26, 1889 to Alli and Clara Moeller Schmidt. Paul was alive in 1943. Anna died on February 21, 1974 and was buried in Smithfield Cemetery.

Mary Zickau died on January 15, 1938 and was buried in Section Y of St. Mary's Cemetery, Penn Avenue, Lawrenceville, PA.
