Tapp Genealogy: Missing Tapps

Missing Tapps

There could be a number of reasons you don't find your Tapps in my databases. Common problems are:

Naming Issues
Your Tapp may have gone by a nickname like Sallie when her real name was Elizabeth Sarah and the census has her indexed as Eliza and to top it all off her age is not matching between census decades. There are also several instances of Tapps who use go by their middle name in some census years.
Age is Off
It is quite common that ages are off in the census. Sometimes the age was given by a family member who was "guesstimating". Try looking at ages plus or minus 10 years if you are having trouble finding your Tapp.
Birthplace is Off
It is quite common that birthplaces are incorrect in the census. Sometimes the birthplace was given by a family member who was unsure.
Indexing
Unfortunately, no index is perfect or complete and for the most part I used indexes to find the pages to look up. For example, I still need to find an index to 1870 Fauquier County, Virginia or 1840 Tennessee.
Spelling/Transcription Errors
I have looked up the spelling variations of Tap, Taps, and Tapps for most years. I have also looked for common spelling errors, transcriptions errors and first names when I had reason to believe that there should have been Tapps in that county in that year. For example, I found Vincent Tapp as Vincent Lass in 1850 Spotsylvania County, Virginia and the Logan County, Ohio Tapps were indexed as Sapp in both 1850 and 1860. Many individuals indexed as Tapp are actually Topp or Sapp and vice versa.
Not Enumerated
It is also possible that your family was missed by the enumerator.

Please contact me with information on missing Tapps and I'll try to find them and then add them to the database.
