I got stoped and it hasbeen about a week now. I am here with a pensil again, but the old mancould not quite keep up so the old fokes hung out a flag and the yungfolks follow on until they found it. They drove several days and in themorning Grandfather Joel said to Charles my colts are gaunting (?) up andI must give them a day rest. Charles said the old Mair has gained looksbest this morning and kept up not more than 4 or 5 miles and caught it inless than an hour so I guess we will keep her going and got through totheir destination a day or two first which pleased them very much.Somewhere along the trip the young folks tiped over in the snow whilethey were straightning up and getting things back to place, Joel walked alittle where he could see down a steep bank when he came back said if wehad gone down there we would have wanted Bread and Butter. Uncle Joeltold me this and other interesting things when he was here about 48 or 49years ago. It was after my Father William died and that was 50 years this9 of March and Uncle was 6 years older and he said he would be 90.

The Keeler Family History

The Keeler family is descended from Ralph Keeler, born in England about1613, who came to Hartford, Connecticut around 1634. He later marriedSarah Whepley.

Lot and Catherine Goodnough Keeler of Rutland, Vermont, later ofPittsford, were the parents of Lewis Keeler, and early settler ofConcord, who was born May 29, 1801 in Pittsford. In 1831 he marriedEliza Thompson at Chesire, Connecticut. They had two children: Eliza, born in 1834, married Charles Higgins at Concord in 1855, and died inLansing, Michigan in 1920; and Mary, born in 1836 in Dundee, Michigan, and died in 1837. His wife Eliza also died at Dundee in 1837.

Later that year, Lewis Keeler moved to Concord. Here he met and courtedDamaris Blake Coleman, who was the widow of Daniel Coleman, postmaster ofJacksonopolis, later known as Jackson. He was killed when thrown from abuggy two weeks after his marriage.

On June 8, 1840, Lewis Keeler and Damaris Blake Coleman where married atConcord. Mr Keeler ran a general store, known as the Stone Wall Storefor many years. He bought and sold property. He became an Elder in thePresbyterian Church in 1843 and served in that position for thirty-twoyears until his death. In 1840 he started his house at 126 HanoverStreet. This house was later moved to 124 South Concord Street and isnow the home of Mr and Mrs Harrison Jacobs.

Lewis and Damaris Keeler had seven children:

Ida, born March 21, 1841, died April 5, 1920.

Lot III was born October 1, 1843, and died March 29, 1919. (He marriedSarah Warner in 1871).

Jesse, born January 11, 1845, died April 3, 1854.

Ella was born September 4, 1848 and died April 3, 1935. (She marriedDaniel Mann in 1873 and they had three daughters, Mary Ida, Jessie, andElizabeth, who died in infancy.

Lewis Jr was born April 6, 1851 and died April 25, 1852.

Charles was born February 24, 1853 and died October 7, 1928. (He marriedFlorence Carpenter at Portland, Michigan in 1857. They had one daughter,Margaret Hope Harris, now of California.)

George Lewis was born November 28, 1857 and died May 11, 1951. (He wasmarried to Eva McKenzie in 1887. They had three children.)

The three children of George Lewis were: Kenneth Blake, 1892-1967;Married to Kay Anderson. He attended Albion College for two years and in1918 graduated from Northwestern Medical College, Chicago. He practicedin Albion for about 35 years. Dr Keeler was a life member of the ConcordMasonic Lodge No 30. He left one daughter, Mrs Marion Rowan, and threegrandchildren. The second child was Blanche E, who was born on February23, 1895 and died a few months later, on June 11, 1895. The third childwas Howard Lewis, born December 22, 1899, died on October 7, 1973. Hewas married to Eva Dunham. He enlisted in World War I in his senior yearof school. Howard started with the post office in 1923 and was a ruralmail carrier until his retirement in 1960. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper. In December 1945, Pete Blyvels, local fur buyer, reported he had purchased 36 fox pelts from Howard. It being the largestsingle purchase of such pelts he had ever made. Howard said all of theanimals were caught in the Concord area. He was a fisherman in thewinter mostly and almost always gave away the big pike he speared. Hecontinued all his sports until failing health forced him to give themup. He was a member of the VFW Post 823 in Jackson for thirty years andserved as a Concord Volunteer Fireman for many years. Howard left threechildren, Robert, Janice, and Pauline.

Lewis Keeler was one of the three land owners who donated land and $500to help get the railway started here. A line from Jackson to Niles wascompleted in 1871. It has been told that Lewis, with some others, planted the maple trees that border Hanover Street and those that werealong M-60 and North Concord Road.

George Keeler was always active in community affairs. He took pride inthe offices he held in the township and village. He served as townshipsupervisor from May, 1904, to March, 1918. In April, 1921, he waselected to the Village Council, where he served until he resigned in1938. He was also clerk of Session in the Presbyterian Church from 1919to 1944 and served as treasurer for the church.

George Keeler told of when he was young that the sidewalks were largeslabs of wood sawed from huge logs. Although he always lived in town hedid own a farm which he let out on shares. At one time the slaveunderground route came through Concord. One slave, from Alabama, stayedin Concord, lived in town and did odd jobs for people in the area. Laterhe moved to the Keeler farm and lived there until he died on August 28,1914. He was Solomon Patterson (Old Sol).

George Keeler's only means of transportation was the horse and buggy. One of his enjoyments was to hitch Old Jim to the buggy and drive to hisfarm, where he drove through the fields and woods to Gregory Lake. Hewas a remarkable and respected man in this community.
