There is a family tradition that Emma Conner and her mother, Margaret Ellen (Sackett) Conner were married in a double wedding to William Berry and his son Wiltz Berry. Weygant has Emma Conner married to William Berry and her mother married to John Berry.

The Cass County WPA Marriage Records [https://sites.rootsweb.com/~incass/mcon-cop.html]
have the following:
Conner Ellen John H Berry Sept 3 1874; Book 5, page 585
Conner Emma Wilson R Berry Jan 30 1878; Book 6, page 414

[This is appears to be a case where a family tradition is shown to be in error. It could be that Wilson and Emma met at her mother's wedding and that Wilson and and/or Emma had determined at that time they were in love. - T, King]

Emma and Wiltz took a stagecoach, on the ice, ACROSS Lake Ontario to Canada for their honeymoon. Wiltz, was an accomplished artist who painted murals in the Parliament Building in Ottawa. Dr. F. P. Antle

Among the physicians of Menard County, none stand higher in reputation for professional skill, and as an honored and useful citizen, that Dr. Francis P: Antle of Petersburg. He is of Scotch and German blood, and comes from patriotic stock. His maternal descent is traced from the Buchanans, who early emigrated from Scotland to America and be is a member of the same branch of the family with President Buchanan, to whom he was second cousin. His grandfather, Alexander Buchanan was a volunteer in the Continental army at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. He was betrayed by a Tory to the British in 1777, while on a visit to his home on Long Island, was captured and held a prisoner during the winter in the city of New York, which was then in the possession of the British. After several ineffectual attempts, he at last succeeded in making his escape and regaining Washington's army. Rather than incur the risk of being hung, a fate which would certainly have been his had he again fallen into the hands of the enemy, he sold a valuable tract of land on Long Island for a small sum of continental money and set out with his family for Kentucky, then just heard of as a land of promise to the pioneer beyond the Alleghenies. The journey was made through a wild and uninhabited country, and Dr. Antle remembers to have heard from his mother, who was a little girl at the time, stories of the dangers and privations to which they were subject in the wilderness, which had then been visited only by Daniel Boone and a few other hardy adventurers.
The ancestors of Dr. Antle's father came from Germany, and settled in North Carolina. His grandfather on his father's side was also a soldier of the Revolutionary struggle, and at its close followed the tide of emigration to Kentucky.
Dr. Antle is the son of Michael and Mary Ann Buchanan. There were married in Kentucky, and lived for a time near Lexington. When reports reached them of the beauty and fertility of the Illinois prairie lands, which were just then being opened up to settlers, they resolved to sell their Kentucky farm and try their fortunes in the new country. They left home in the fall of 1819, and remained during the winter at Goshen, a settlement about twenty miles from St. Louis. In the spring they resumed their journey northward, and in March, 1820, settled on a tract of land eight miles to the southeast of where Jacksonville now is. There were then but few families in that neighborhood.
Here Francis P. Antle was born, May 1, 1824. His early life was spent on his father's farm. A school established in the vicinity afforded a means of education through the winter months, and so well were its advantages improved that at the age of eighteen he began teaching in the same school where he had been a pupil. He engaged in this occupation for four years, and then for the greater part of a year sold books through the County for a Philadelphia publishing house. His tastes had always inclined him toward medicine, and the succeeding year, when twenty-four, he began its study at Springfield with Mr. J. D. Freeman. Two years were spent in Springfield, and in 1856 he went to Cincinnati, and attended medical lectures at the Eclectic Medical Institute. At the conclusion of these courses of lectures he removed to Williamsville, Sangamon County, established a drug store, and engaged in the practice of medicine. In 1859 he again visited Cincinnati and took an additional course of lectures, after which he made Petersburg his home and has ever since been actively employed with the duties of his profession.
Dr. Antic married, January 28, 1858, Dorcas Ann Mosteller, of Rock Creek, Menard County, whose parents were early settlers of Sangamon County. They have four children.
Though his extensive professional practice has left but little time for other matters, yet Dr. Antle has always been a citizen of great public spirit, and has contributed materially to the
growth and prosperity of Petersburg. As a disciple of the healing art, he has practiced medicine with a skill and success not surpassed. by that of any other physician in the section in which he lives. His private life is blameless. His modest and unassuming deportment, genial disposition, and frank courtesy make him welcome not only at the bedside of the sick, but among all classes of the community. Few citizens of the County have won wider respect and esteem.

Dr. Francis Antle

Dr. Francis Antle, who had the honor of being elected in 1882 as the first mayor of Petersburg, was the builder of this large square brick house which is located at the corner of Antle Street and 7th Street, Petersburg. This house has nine large rooms with large halls running the length of the house upstairs and downstairs. The original portico was removed and a modem porch was built in later years on the front of this house.
Dr. Antic was the son of Michael and Mary Ann Buchanan Antle and was born near Jacksonville, Illinois in 1824 on his fathers farm. His mother was a cousin of President James Buchanan, the family coming originally from Scotland, arriving in America in 1630.
Dr. Antle taught school for four years, and at the age of 24 began the study of medicine in Cincinnati, Ohio. He later established a drug store at Williarnsville in Sangamon county where he also engaged in the practice of medicine. He later returned to Cincinnati for additional courses and lectures, after which he came to Petersburg to practice medicine.
Dr. Antle was married in 1858 to Miss Dorcas Ann Mosteller of Rock Creek. They were the parents of four children, lona, who married Charles C. Frackelton, Thomas Powell Antle who married Anna M. Smoot, Hattie and Ella who died in childhood of diphtheria. Dr. Francis P. Antic had only one grandchild, William Smoot Antle, who was the son of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Powell Antle.
Dr. and Mrs. Francis P. Antle united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, which at that time had no church home, holding their Sunday School, prayer meetings and preaching services in the court house. Mrs. Antic was determined that the congregation have a church home, and worked tirelessly with the congregation until the church, (now a Baptist Church) was built. Much credit was given to her that the venture was successful. Mrs. Antle also allowed members of the newly organized Episcopal Church Sunday School class which was organized in 1867, to use her home as a meeting place. The present Episcopal Church was built in 1873 on land donated by Mrs. Thomas L. Harris. Dr. Antle died in 1890 and Mrs. Antle in 1895.

Francis P. Antle, MD

Francis Petree Antle, physician and mayor of the city of Petersburg, is a native of Morgan county, this state, and was born six miles southeast of Jacksonville, May 1, 1824. His father, Michael Antle, son of a German emigrant, left Bourbon county, Kentucky, in 1819; spent the following winter near Edwardsville, Madison county, and in the spring of 1824 settled in Morgan, then apart of Madison county. Illinois as a state, was then only two years old, and Michael Antle was one of the pioneers in the vicinity in which he located. He married Mary Ann Buchanan, a cousin of ex-President James Buchanan, and daughter of Alexander Buchanan, who lived on Long Island at the breaking out of the war in 1775, and was a soldier under Washington. Betrayed by a Tory, he was taken prisoner by the British, kept in New York City during an entire winter, finally stole away, got back to the army, but a price was set on his head. He had permission to leave, and sold out and went into the Wilderness of Kentucky.
The subject of this sketch received a fair English education in Jacksonville, supplementing it with careful study in private, and fitting himself for a teacher while working on his father's farm. Commencing at eighteen he taught four winters in. succession, having meantime the medical profession in view. He read medicine with Doctor Freeman, of Springfield; attended a course and a half of lectures in the Eclectic Medical Institute, Cincinnati; practiced three years at Williamsville, Sangamon county; returned to Cincinnati and took another course in the same college, and received his medical diploma in May, 1859. Prior to that time, January 28, 1858, he married Miss Dorcas Ann Mosteller, of Sangamon county.
In June, 1860, Doctor Antle settled in Petersburg, the shire town of Menard county and for twenty-three years has been in practice here, making a praiseworthy record, alike as a physician and surgeon and as a citizen of the county. For seventeen consecutive years he was a country physician; was a member of the town. board, and its president for five or six years. He was elected the first mayor of Petersburg in May, 1882, and was reelected in April, 1883. Doctor Antle is a public spirited, thoroughgoing business man, and it was a fitting compliment to his worth as such a citizen to place him at the head of the municipality of Petersburg on its being incorporated as a city.
Doctor Antic is a Sir Knight in the Masonic fraternity, one of the constituent members of the Alderman Commandery, No. 47. and was its treasurer for a long time. He has also taken all the degrees in the subordinate lodge of Odd-Fellowship. The doctor is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, a man of highly exemplary character, and a good friend of the poor. No city can be overcrowded with this class of men.
By the marriage already mentioned our subject has had four children, burying the two youngest. Thomas Powell Antle, the only son he has ever had, is a graduate of Illinois College, Jacksonville; of the Eclectic Medical Institute, Cincinnati, and has taken an extra course of lectures in the University of Michigan and the Bellevue Hospital. Medical College, New York City, and having graduated from the same, is now located at Springfield, Illinois practicing his profession. Iona Olivia, the only daughter living, was educated at the academy and Methodist College, Jacksonville, and is a teacher of vocal and instrumental music, being with her parents.

STILL A MYSTERY

Nothing in regard to the whereabouts of Dr. T. Antle who mysteriously disappeared home on November 4 has been brought to light. When last seen, be was in the vicinity ofthe C & A depot, and has not been seen or heard of since. However, some advance the opinion that he depaited for his fruit farm in CahIomia, but of course that is only conjecture. A fifty dollar reward is offered for information of his present whereabouts.

OBITUARY

On Saturday last, Ella Mary, daughter of F. P. and D. A. Antle, aged 10 years, 7 months and 10 days, passed from life into death, after an illness of several days. The disease was diphtheria in its most virulent form. All that medical skill could devise was done to give her relief; (she was visited by every physician in the city) but all in vain - Death, who "loves a shining mark," had marked her for his own, and after suffering intense agony, she passed away as above. The funeral services, Rev. R. D. Miller, of the C. P. church, officiating, were held at the Presbyterian church, Monday, at 1:30 p.m., and were attended by one of the largest congregations ever assembled there, after which the remains were interred in Rose Hill cemetery, and were followed to their last resting place by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends of the family. Our little friend has gone, no more will she run with willing feet to meet the loved ones left behind; never again on earth will the smiling and beautiful face cast a ray of sunshine around her; her childish prattle will never again enliven the family circle, or mingle mirthfully with that of her young friends and associates. The little feet are still in death; the beauteous face and form lie cold and silent in the tomb, there to wait the summons which shall call it forth to be united with the loved ones left behind in an everlasting and glorified existence on the shores of the beautiful river which lies beyond the dark valley and shadow of death. And that voice, though stilled on earth, will be trained by angelic minstrels above to join the sweet chorus of the heavenly choir, who sing in that better land. In the death of our little friend we have another evidence that the grim monster Death is no respector of persons. His cold and icy hand clasps that of the king upon his throne, and the beggar in his hovel with the same relentless grasp. He respects neither age or sex, bond or free. The sturdy oak, that has braved the blast of many winters, and the beautiful flower, just opening its tiny petals to shed its beauty and fragrance on the landscape, alike bow before his approach, and fall in dust and ashes at his feet.
