The best known (to me and many cousins) family story of her trip to India is the story of Hannah's stay in Zanzibar. Robert and Hannah were invited to the Sultan's palace. In the course of the evening, the Sultan asked if they could tell him what was the nature of a "strange box" which had been given him by Queen Victoria. It was a piano. Hannah played the piano for the Sultan -- for the entire evening at his insistence. At the end of the evening the Sultan brought out six women and offered to trade them to Robert for Hannah. He declined the offer. Hannah and Robert worked at the American Marathi Mission in Byculla, Bombay.

Hannah married Robert Wilson Hume-1188sp son of Robert Hume and Catherine Rose on 25 Mar 1839 in Hampden, MA.. Robert was born on 8 Nov 1809 in Stamford Twp., Delaware Co., NY.. He died about 9 Dec 1854 in On ship Merchantman off Capetown, South Africa.
A short time after their marriage, Edward and Hannah D. Sacket entered the foreign mission field, going to India. There they labored faithfully and not without results for a number of years, when Mr. Hume became broken in health and they reluctantly took passage for a return voyage to their native land. Mr. Hume died on the voyage and was buried at sea, leaving Mrs. Hume to continue her homeward journey with their five young children, two of whom, on reaching maturity, returned to India and took up the work their parents had laid down. - Weygant

Robert Wilson and Hannah Sackett Hume left Salem, Mass. on April 11, 1839 on the brig "Waverley" a ship of 232 tons. She was carrying ice to Bombay. The ice had come from Spots Pond in Arlington, Mass.
Robert became ill in 1854. Hannah took him and her children on board the ship MERCHANTMAN to return to the US. Robert died of dysentery on board ship off Capetown. Hannah took the children back to the US. Somehow, she got them all through college. Both her sons returned to mission work with the American Marathi Mission.
