OLD BELKNAP TOWN CEMETERY

Located 2 miles from Newcastle on FM 61, this cemetery is actually located about 1/4 mile east of Fort Belknap, and isn't to be confused with the old military cemetery.   There are many lost graves here and the markers remaining appear 'scattered', making it difficult to list graves in the order in which they are found so in this survey , we simply listed them in 'groups'. A sign dates this old graveyard from 1855.   There have been few recent burials.   We found many brick and stone enclosures which had no names.   However, the grave of Conrad Neuhous, who died in 1860, has one of these brick enclosures so I feel they can be safely dated to this very early period of Belknap history. Surveyed 2003 by Gene Tarvin and Barbara Jarvis.
