On Jane...
Jane married Johnston Armstrong from Sharbot Lake and they lived on Fall River Road. They had at least one child, a daughter Grace.

The Diary was made for 1897, but she writes in the front St. Lawrence 1898 and events such as death and marriages from other sources give year as 1898.

I have transcribed as it was written. There are probably errors in transcription, but this will give you a general idea.
Diary book has 2 sides for a day, when she writes something separate on the second side I indicate this by write �side-� followed by her text.

JANUARY

Fri Jan. 1
Went to Wolfe Island drove � mile on ice boat then a cold drive of ten miles over river and land. Got to destination about 7 p.m
Sat Jan 2
Got up about 9 a.m. went to church at 10.30 came home and had dinner and remained in for the rest of the day. Day was stormy and blustery.
Mon Jan 4
Went to school came home at 4 and had a visit of Miss Scott. Day fine.
Tue Jan 5
Went to school then to a party at Mr. Horne and got home at 1.30a.m. Day fine.
Wed Jan 6
Day fine. Got up at 7.15 went to school though very tired came home wrote a letter and studied.
Side- Dance at McLarens Hall. Wall took Grace and Geo. Louise.
Thu Jan 7
Day fine went to school, came home and studied gave W. some lesson in algebra.
Fri Jan 8
Day fine. Went to school, had a bad cold, came home and wrote a letter to E.S.

Day fine stay at home.

Stayed at home and went to church in the afternoon. Martin came up in evening.

Day fine. Went to school. Played dominoes at night with Mr. Woodman, George, B.B. and Chella.
Tue Jan 12
Day fine went to school came home and went over to Mr. Woodman�s to spend evening. Played dominoes with B.B. Chella, B.M. Mr & Mrs W. came home at 10.
Wed Jan 13
Day wet. Went to school, then went over to Mrs. Barry�s for tea and stayed all night. Thunder storm at night.

Day fine went to school and came home and studied.

Day dull. Went to school came home played dominoes wieth G.M., C.W(N.?).H.J A.O.U.W.Ball Then had music at village in evening.

Day dull. Light snowfall. Visited at C. Woodmans in afternoon came home. Played dominoes with T.? Woodman B.R., Chella.

Mr. N & Geo went to town. Stayed in house all day, played checkers with V.P. and he washed my face in snow. V.P. and Wal�can�t read rest

Went to church with V.P C, Wal came home with H. Joslin. Spent afternoon and evening with V. & C. Wal went down to Burnhams alla? loosened bed C and Sam in choir. Geo & ane? went home. Met Alice McCartney in church.

FEBRUARY

Mon Feb 1
Went to school with G. & V. day cold. Played dominoes & checkers with V. at night. Saw two ghosts after being in bed half an hour.
Tue Feb 2
Day very stormy & cold. Went to school with V.G. &W. only had 7 scholars. V. & W. came for me at night. Went to bed early.
Wed Feb 3
Went to school with V. &G. V went home. C. M.B. A. ball at village. Mrs Ferguson felle.
Thu Feb 4
Went to school. Oyster supper at W.G. Woodman�s Night stormy so it wasn�t a success.
Fri Feb 5
Went to school and Wal drove Chella and I down to Burnham�s in evening. Met Hi.J. & wife and Evan Bates played Winkin sly-by and �Who Sir� M. and Val went for mail.

Nothing important.

Wal & Miss Scott went for a drive. Went to church in afternoon with G.B.E.?,M.S.C. & M. Caroll. Wrote two letters.
Mon Feb 8
Went to school. Oyster supper at Mr. Woodman�s. Went to Mrs. Dignems and stayed all night. Danced and had a nice time. Day fine.

Went to school. Came home and went out on ice for a walk also went for the mail and visited C. Woodman�s got letter from ED

Went to school. Garden Island Concert. Wal went to it.

Went to school. Played dominos with Mr. N., G.N., Mrs. N., C. Woodman, Geo Woodman, B.R., Geo Horne & Rob Horn visited in evening & played Pedre

Went to school. Wal over river. Had fun at night. Masquerade ball at village.
Sat Feb 13
Stayed at home and Martin came up in afternoon. Boys went down to Bamfords and F.? Woodmans.
Sun Feb 14
Went to church in morning came home had dinner and went down to Bamfords� had a visit of Miss Scott and talked and sang ? M.C. ??? walked H.D. until 9.30 ??? lent me two books to read.
Mon Feb 15
Went to school came home with sore throat and not well. Went to bed early. Wal went to see Miss Scott. C. & I talked in parlor for half an hour until bed time.
Tue Feb 16
Went to school, was very hoarse all day. H.H. came in eveing and stayed all night. Geo & R. Horne were here and all played Pedro at night Day Stormy. L. Joy drove us home from school.
Wed Feb 17
Got up in morning with a heavy cold on my lungs and unable to speak beyond a whisper. Day nasty. Doctored all day for a cold. H.H. went home.
Thu Feb 18
Stayed home cold not much better. Geo & Mr. N went across the river. Ice boating going on. Wal went to see Miss Scott in evening and Geo brought L. home.
Fri Feb 19
Day wet. Stayed home with cold boys went across the river. Geo. Morgan and Jim came down and played Pedro. C & I. slept together and bed fell down. Visit from Maud Watson & Irene Halliday.
Sat Feb 20
Cold just same. Dick & Jim Maloney came across the river in ice boat and took Wal over to Dr. Buchman�s for medicine brought him back Geo. Lane? Also came with his ice boat & took G.N. back with him. Had a visit of M.S. & J?. M. Ice boating.
Sun Feb 21
Day Stormy. Stayed in house all day. Louis Joy came in afternoon and he and Wal went off down to Burnhams. C & I sat in parlor and chatted Chell played.
Mon Feb 22
Day stormy. Stayed in the house sewed ???? rags and read a book boys got grain ready to take to kingston.
Tue Feb 23
Day stormy. R. Horne drove me to school just had five scholars. Walked home and was very tired. Mr. N. and boys went to town. Played dominoes with Mr. N., G., C. G. & I got 2 to 5 Got letters from Dr. Spankie waltzed with Chella
Wed Feb 24
Went to school. Came home and all wnet down to Mr. Horn�s. Boys played Pedro. I played checkers with Louise each got two games. Were treated to cake, popcorn & apples. Got home about 11 pm
Thu Feb 25
Walked to school. Boys and Mr. Niles went to Kingston. Miss Scott came up in evening and stayed till after 9. Wal went home with her. Day stormy and clear.
Fri Feb 26
Geo drove Inez & I to school. Met H. Sheriault here and he told me father had gone to Vancouver on Thursday. Ch & I went for mail at night. We met Edward Quinn, B. Morgan, L.W. B.B. M.C. came home and read letter from E.S. & went to bed. Jim Morgan, Mr. N and boys played Pedro

Went to town with Mr. N. & G. & Mr. O�Brien. Went up and saw Mrs. Sheriault & Mrs. Flynn. Came home at 2pm Mr. & Mrs. N. went down to Mr. Dickson�s and the rest stayed home.
Sun Feb 28
Went to church in the morning. Maud Cornell & Miss Fredenburgh? Came here for dinner then we visited at C. Woodmans and met Miss Reid. Came home & Sadie Niles was here. H.H. was here in evening.

Went to school came home Mrs. C. Woodman, Miss Ried, Sylvie & baby were here for tea & Charlie & W. B. were here in evening & played Pedro

Went to school came home W.C., S.J. & I went over to C. Woodman�s in evening. We met R. Horn and Wal. turned back with him Played dominos & came home about 10pm. Hasly? & Gallagher elected.
Wed Mar 3
Went to school came home & went to a party at Mr. Joslin�s in the evening in a boat with Horn�s and Niles and Martin. Had a good time & came home at 2 pm. M. Scott & I danced double Scotch Reel with Mr. Horne

Went to school came home played dominoes with Mr. N.G.N. & Mrs. N. George and I got three games to three.
Fri Mar 5
Went to school came home & went to a dance at Mr. Dickson�s with G.N. & L.H. came home about 12pm with Chell & John. Met H.D. and he sang Sweet Bunch of Daisies.
Sat Mar 6
Went to town about 9am with Frank Woodman & Emma Ried got home about 7 pm visited Mrs. Campbell and Mrs. King? Stayed at home for the evening�..(rest cut off)
Sun Mar 7
C. & Sadie & George & Lou went down to Joslins. Millie O�Niel came over and stayed for dinner. Went to church and brought M. Scott & Pearly back with us they stayed till 10 pm. H.H. here also. S. D. went home with C.W.
Mon Mar 8
Went to school. Came home. Mr. & Mrs. Dickson & Charlie were here and we played and sang hums. W. D.? sang Marguerite and Don�t Be Angry with me dad. Mr. N. across river. R. Horn went away.
Tue Mar 9
Walked to school. Geo. Came for a meal the roads were muddy. L.H. A.H. & M??? H., M.C., Jim Morgan & Frank Woodman were here in evening & played pedro till 11.30 Wal??? played dominos & checkers refreshments.
Wed Mar 10
Went to school. Johnny drove me home in the buggy the first of the season. Wrote two letters to E.S. & mother & studied wrote in diary. Boys went down to Horne�s.
Thu Mar 11
Went to school in the buggy with Johnny & Inez. Fell out of it crossing the creek between the wheels and hurt my side came home. People all busy tapping trees.
Fri Mar 12
Went to school and went over to Mrs. Barry�s and stayed all night. Ruth & I played & sang roads muddy & it rained. Went to bed at 10pm & got up a little after 7 am.
Sat Mar 13
Stayed at Barry�s till about 1.30 came through the fields & went over to Flynn�s got myself all mud. Mrs. Flynn was at the ferry and nobody buy John, Hannah & Millie were there stayed all night.
Sun Mar 14
Weather squally & ice went nearly all out. Stayed at Flynns. It rained but cleared in the afternoon and L. Dignem came up and we stayed all night. He brought some maple syrup and we chatted in evening.
Mon Mar 15
Got up early Tom, Millie & I went to school the ground being frozen. Walked home. Grace B., Maud Watson, Edna Quinn came up and spent the evening. Geo took sick with cold.
Tue Mar 16
Went to school came home & went with Chell for mail in evening but got none. Put stones on road to step over mud but got nearly stuck coming back. Lost my rubber but Geo Morgan found it & came home with us. Visited in Charlie Woodman�s for a little while.
Wed Mar 17
.Went to school came home chatted with Chell at night. Geo sick. Dora Gillespie & E. Bates married at home by Mr. Dibbs. Wal went down to help sh?vares them.

Went to school came home. Chell & I waltzed & sang in evening. Studied and went to bed about 9pm. Day fine
Fri Mar 19
Went to school came home & went over to the P.O. met M. Schoot there came home with M.O�Niel & H. Flynn was here waiting for her when we got back. Mail did not get down till 8 pm and I did not get any letters. (Goes into Sat Mar 20) J. Morgan lit the school house fire & boys went down to Horns with the boat at night. Mr. N. & Geo. Went across the river & down to Dicksons in evening. Day rainy.

Miss Gordon went to church. Chella is sick. Edna Quinn & Maud Watson here�Jim Woods & Michael Hennessay here & spent evening.

Mr. Niles & John went to village today �Chella is better today. Say � she is a devil catcher� Martin, Frank & Valtie B. here.

Mail night. Wallace went after the mail. No on here today.
Wed Mar 24
Mr. Niles went over the river today. Mrs. Berry, Ruth, Charlie, W. came over, the old she devil raised a great fuss�but Wallace shut her up when she got to gay�Marten came up �he goes away tomorrow.
Thu Mar 25
Martin C. went to Kingston today to start for Chicago, Edna Quinn spent afternoon here. Mr. Niles went over the river he brought R. Horne & G. Farr with him, played Pedro and stayed all night.
Fri Mar 26
Geo N. Geo F.? went over to the Bay. R.H. went home. Walter H. here for awhile, Boy�s down to Mr. Horne�s awhile, they danced a little, Miss Scott came up & will remain until Sunday.
Sat Mar 27
Mrs. N. is ill. Mr & Mrs. Cornell here for dinner, as they were leaving. H. Joslin & A. Horne came here. Miss Scott & I arrived home at 4pm, after spending a delightful time at Joys & Dignem�s we all drove down to Mr. H from there to H. Joslins, where we enjoyed a food? Dance. returned home midnight

Day fine & windy. Went to church in afternoon. There were ??bly three girls there. Chell was sick. M. W. & E.Q. were up in the morning. Wal & the Bamfords went down to Dignems at night.

Thu Apr 1
Went to school came home got weighed (117 �) Mr. N., Geo. Farre? & R Horn came across the river & stayed all night & played cards.
Fri Apr 2
G.N. & G.F. went across the river came back & went down to Horne�s at night. Miss Scott came up & stayed al night. She slept with me & we talked till near 1 o�clock.

M. Scott & I did some work & went down to Joy�s were out for a row with Lester Called at Dignem�s.
Sun Apr 4
Lydia stayed last night with us & us three girls went to church together. H.H. here in the even.
Mon Apr 5
Mr. Bamford went to Cleveland today & Hay-presser came today. They went & got George Farr to help them. J.H.C. G. C.A.N.
Tue Apr 6
Hay presser went up to the village tonight. Miss Scott & Pearly came up & the latter served Miss S. rather a mean trick her got ready & drove away & left her she was obliged to walk home. W. acted as an escort.
Wed Apr 7
Geo. Horne & Geo Black left today for the Upper lakes. Geo. N. took G. F. home, Martha Nesbith & Eliza Gillespie were here today on a missionary affair. Chell & I grated five bottles of horse Rddish.
Thu Apr 8
Went home. Got acquainted with K. Kane and her cousin. Went up to Mary�s school in the afternoon called at Mrs. Theriault�s. Mary went down town. Mother went over to Mrs. C.�s in evening.
Fri Apr 9
Got up about 7.30. Stayed at home. John sent up some Hot Cross buns about 8am then he went out in the afternoon and evening. The Bailies called n the afternoon. Ma went over to Manny? Smiths for some ??on & his wife called.
Sat Apr 10
Mother went over to Mrs. Campbell�s & stayed all morning. Mary went down town and bought some trimming for my white hat, came home and trimmed it. Ella Daly called about 2 pm. Mother & I went down town shopping & called at (last line cut off)
Sun Apr 11
We all went to church in the morning. I went for a walk alone in the afternoon as far as Joyce�s. Mother & I called at Mrs. McIver�s in the afternoon & John & I went to church in the evening.
Mon Apr 12
Stayed at home all day. Mary stayed over at Mrs. Campbell�s all morning till the afternoon. Washed in the morning. Mother & I visited at Mrs. Ned Bryant�s in the evening.
Tue Apr 13
We ironed. I studied a little Mrs. Gould called in the afternoon. Mother & I visited Mrs. King�s & Mrs. Campbell�s in the evening. Came home about 9.30
Wed Apr 14
Studied during the day. Mrs. Therialt and M Campbell called in the afternoon. Minnie stayed for tea & went over to Smith�s with me in the evening. Called on Mrs. Derry & M. went to prayer meeting. Mother called at Mrs. Derry�s also.
Thu Apr 15
Went down town early in the morning. Mary went down to the bat with me in the afternoon. Made a mistake by not getting on the 4? so had to go to the ferry & back. Met V.P. on the boat. Got home at 6 Talked all night to Chell. Found that Geo. went away the day I went.
Fri Apr 16
Stayed at home went over to the P.O. & visited at C. Woodman�s in the evening. Came home.
Sat Apr 17
Dick Maloney & Will Niles came over & went spearing? with our boys. Nothing very important. ( All previous crossed out.) This happened wk before. K?. W. & I went up to Mr. O�Briens spent evening. D. Hallidy was there. Eleven o�clock when we got home.

Cleaned the school. Had a programme in the afternoon. L. Horne & Wal wen to the Cape. L. went to school with us & saw M. Dignem recited. C. Read. Went for a drive with L & horse kicked broke the whipple- tree. Wal kea??? Back to the P.O.. Got 2 letters one from home & from E.S. got a hat.

There was to be a dance at Hogan�s but? Mary, ? Rained & stormed terribly. Mr. H.H. was down at night he & Mary had a big time throwing apples. Wal went down to Bamford�s.

Mr. & Mrs. Joy here at night. Stayed home. Mary, Ch. & I went up to Irvine�s. Mary & Wal went for a drive down to foot in eve. Ch & I went up to O�Brien�s & had a nice time. H. Dignem & Will Mac came home with us. L. Joy & H. Joslin there.

Mary went for a row & a walk with Wal. Mary, Chell, Mrs. N., In & I went to church in morning. Mary went away at 1.30 W. drove her to ferry. H.H. came in afternoon.

Chell, Wal, John & I went to a dance at Mr. Joslin�s met Mrs. Hiram Joslin had a nice time. H.H. brought Chell & I home early. Wore my white muslin.

Chell, Wall & John went to picnic at Bob Smith�s got home late. J. Vanness came down. H.H. brought Chell home.
Thu Aug 19
J. Vanness here. Went to dock at night & for a walk. F.? Woodman & Hilda Robinson here in evening had a nice time. Mr. N went to Kingston.
Fri Aug 20
M.Bolton, L.Woodman, A. Brill here in afternoon. Min & Hannah O�Brien at night, played tag etc had a lovely time they went home 11. F. Woodman here also.
Sat Aug 21
J. Vanness, Chell & I went up at 9,30 to L. Woodman�s spent day got home C. & I put horse out alone at 11p.m. A. Brill, M. Bolton there had a lot of fun with Alfred played all ?????? ????? weighed 110. M.& L Scott up at� rest cut off.
Sun Aug 22
Chell & I went to church in afternoon. Mrs. N., W., In & I went over to Bamford�s a little at night. W. went up to H. H. brought home c?ip.
Mon Aug 23
Thrashers came 5 pm. Very busy & warm. Chell & I cooled off in Reub�s buggy while they had supper. Had a hot time with Reub.
Tue Aug 24
Thrashers very busy went over to P.O. got a parcel from mother nice new purse. Etc. Rained. Supper 8.30 Geo. Mac stayed all night.

Very busy with thrashers. W. Macdonald drove us home from school. Geo Mac. stayed all night. Rained.
Thu Aug 26
Thrashers left for Mr. Horne�s. Chell got disappointed in going to K. Geo. Macdonald was to drive her . ate breakfast with thrashers W. Bam. Reub.
Fri Aug 27
Chell & I went after mail Wal. went to a dance at Dan Hugh�s had a good time. Wall & John thrashed at Mr. Horne�s. also T.? Barnham & W. Maloney.
Sat Aug 28
Mr. & Mrs. N went across river brought back Mrs. Fanre? Went up for Chell�s music. Chell & I, John, Wal. & Jim Maloney went up to Lily W�s at night had a lovely time got home 2.00 ( or 20 of?) Alfred Brill�s ?????? rest cut off.

Chell & I went to church. Lily W. felt bad over Alfred B�s departure. H.H. took Chell & I down to Burnham�s at night
Mon Aug 30
Chell, John & I went up to O�Brien�s in evening till 11.30 didn�t dance had a fair time. Chell, John Mac. married playing charades.
Tue Aug 31
Got a letter from Mary & mother. M. Scott Bertie Joslin & W. Horne here in evening also Mr. & Mrs. Joy here for Chell to go over & help thrash. Got a basket of plums from mother.

SEPTEMBER

Wed Sept 1
Went to school nothing usual. ??u?rr Mary , Herbert & Willie over at Joy�s Mrs. N. got acquainted with mother & got our photos
Thu Sept 2
Mr. & Mrs. N. went to K.C. & W. went over to Joy�s to thrash. In & I went down to Dignem�s for tea. I went to Joy�s & stayed all night with Chell. Went out rowing with C. Geo Mac & L. Joy.
Fri Sept 3
Went to school out driving with Reub McFadden in evening while Chell and L. Ranous were looking at our pictures saw J. Coxall at the cheese factory came home.
Sat Sept 4
Chell & I & D. D. Maloney went up for Chell�s music D. got off at O�Brien�s Mr. & Mrs Niles went down to Dixons. H.H. came & took Chell for a drive. D & W. came home about 8.30. Were to go down to Ranous� but didn�t.
Sun Sept 5
Stayed home all day very warm . C & I lay on grass down by ice house chatted & read. Mrs. N, W. J & D. Maloney went to church. C & I went over to Rattrays to see Clara Mac. John Mac drove us home about 9. Wrote a letter home.
Mon Sept 6
Went to school Wal took Dick over & his mother over the river at night to go to Watertown. Maud Watson gave me a nice boquet. Geo Mac sent me a piece of cake for dinner.
Tue Sept 7

Went to school. Mr. N. went to town. W.& J went to the dock Mr. Geo Niles came home with him. Wrote in my diary. R. Nesbitt drove us home from school.

Chell & Dick Maloney came over the river. Mr. Beadley & Mr. Niles went up to Dick Irvines. Dr. Maloney & Wal stayed up at Mr. Hallidays.

C & I went down in morning to see Mary Dignem & her trosseau. Returned at 12. Mr. Beadle & Dr. Maloney returned home.

Chell took music lesson. Well Bamford here for a boat. Went over to Flynn�s Sunday. H.H. here at night.

Mary Dignem�s wedding day. Mrs. Niles went to Mrs. Bamford�s quilting. C & I went over to P.O. & to Bamford�s. Rained after got home.

Wal went to a party very disagreeable day.

Nothing important. Thanksgiving day. Sad all day on account of disappointment.

Went to school. Chell & I went over to P.O. heard of Sylvia�s illness & Charlie was summoned to Rochester to see her. Louis came home with me from school

Very bad day. Went down to Dickson�s in morning after line?.

Sylvia Wilcott died at 9.30. Got up at 10 on account of cold. Herb & Louis over in evening & brought us a piece of wedding cake.

Went to school. Chell & I went down to Burnham�s had a lovely time only Mr. & Mrs. Burnham home heard of Sylvia�s death. Had a drive with Frank.
Tue Nov 30
Frank W. came & got buggy to go to village to meet Sylvia. Went over to Woodman�s at night & stayed till after 10 o�clock.

DECEMBER

Wed Dec 1
Stayed at home from school & went to Mrs. Wilcott�s funeral which was very large. She was put in the vault. (Written on bottom of Thu) Wed Clara Hogan, M. H. & G. O�Brien & J. Murphy here in evening.

Went to school. Mrs., Wal & Mr. Niles went to Kingston & got home late.

Went to school. Nothing important at home.

C & I went for music lesson M. Scott, Jim Maloney & Geo Farre here & stayed all night. C & I went down the road with M. Scott lovely day and evening.

C & I went to church. Gertie McD came home with us. Geo F., Jim Maloney and Chell ?? over to Rattrays. Hannah Flynn here also Mr. Horne & H.H.

Went to school in evening Wal & John drove me up to Lily�s very cold. A large crowd there had a good time Met Ezzie Irvine & Byron played games retired after eleven.

Visited with Lily and in evening played games told riddles and had a fine time retired about 10.

Mr. Mrs. Minnie Geo & Stan Woodman & I drove to church in a double sleigh & all sang in choir. Day stormy. Wrote in my diary at night and talked to Chell.
Mon Dec 13
Mr. N. went over the river & brought G. N. home with him. We are all delighted�in eve. Came Mr & Mrs. Burnham, Pearley & Miss S. us girles wore overcoats and went after the mail�Louis Joy took us as far as school house driving Will Robison & Hattie Joslin here also, we had a lovely time.

Last Sunday on W. Isle for a while. J.C. & I went to church. Afternoon we called on Mrs. Charles Woodman & enjoyed our selves very much. H. H. & Wallace down in the evening.

Afternoon at 4.30�Came, me & Mrs. Wm Woodman, Lily Minnie, Mamie, George & Stanley we all had a delightful Tea together. We were all glad to see them. Pearly B. Will R. came & spent evening�Lily gave me a lovely embroidered handkerchief for a xmas present, played Fruit Basket, blind mans Buff, we a grand grand time.

Georges Birthday. He is 24, we spanked him lightly indeed. Jennie over to Mr. W. Rattrays the rest of the people to Mr. Burnhams we all enjoyed ourselves.

We were all invited up to Wm? G. Woodman�s on account of bad roads can�t go�I went over to Mr. Joys & Louis brought me Home at 8. George teased me so much. I packed my trunk & Chella & I could hardly keep from crying we talked until the small hours.

I left W.I. this morning�Chell & I both could of cried good & hard but we kept up all right(night?)�John & Mr. N went to K. to. We left about 4.30�I had plenty of company on boat.
