Shirley Blaine Dellinger was described as 190 pounds, 6 feet, 3 inches, black/white hair. Shirley was born at
Arcadia, Hamilton Co., Indiana, on 4 November 1892. He was the son of
Peter Paul Dellinger and
Charlotte Hartley. Shirley was listed on the roll as a student at
Millersburg School, Jackson Twp., Hamilton Co., Indiana, in 1900. Shirl appears in a list of names of pupils for the 1900-1901 school year with Flossie M. Rhoades as his teacher.
Shirl never completed school, only going through eight grade. However from all reports he seemed to be an intelligent, hard working person, who if he had been able to continue with his education could of easily gone on to college.
Shirl could build barns, he added a basement, kitchen and upstairs to his house west of Crawfordsville, using lumber from other houses he dismantled. He could build concrete forms and mix, pour and smooth the concrete. He was also good at repairing his farm equipment, including tearing apart the engines, grinding values, etc. He could cut down a tree with an axe or saw and have it land where he wanted it. He tended to his orchard, and other plants. Plus he'd pierce to stomach of a bloated cow with his pocket knife, through the skin of the cow to save it's life. And he'd castrate young pigs, and deliver calves. He milked six cows in an hour and butcher cattle and pigs to sell the meat. He could cure hams and render lard. And he could pick apples or dig potatoes with equal dexterity. He could sow grass seed with his bare hands over several acres and get a good uniform planting. And he could work all day pitching hay or straw into a hay bailer without getting the fork eaten by the compacting head.. He married
