Newton Twp., Catawba Co., North Carolina, at Grace Lutheran Cemetery. Grace Church is located in Catawba Co. about 8 miles west of Newton. The congregation dates at least from 1797. Like many other churches in this area it began as a "union church." This means the same building was used by two different congregations, Lutheran and German Reformed. The church cemetery would be equally shared by both congregations. According to the "History of the Lutheran Church in NC" published by the NC Lutheran Synod, Grace Church was used jointly until 1941 when it was mutually agreed that each congregation should have its own fulltime house of worship. The Reformed congregation received the old church building, the Lutheran congregation built a new church across the road.
