King of England Richard I "Coeur de Lion" (?) was born on 8 September 1157 at
Beaumont Palace, Oxford, England. He was the son of
King of England Henry II Curtmantle FitzEmpress and
Eleanor of Aquitaine (?). Richard reigned as King of England from 3 September 1189 when he was crowned in Westminster Abbey in London to 6 April 1199 when he died in France.
Richard, a hero of Medival legends, only spent 6 months of his reign in England. Richard joined the 3rd Crusade in 1189 and conquered Messina and Cyprus before arriving in the Holy Land. After his victory at Arsuf in 1191 he started to return to England, but was captured in Austria and he was held prisoner in Germany from 1192 to 1194 and was only released after a hugh ransom was paid for his release to Emperor Henry VI. He briefly returned to England, but then went to France where he died five years later.
