John Marion Houck John M. Houck ran a hardware store in Lenoir, N.C. It was called 'TheCharter Oak', as was a newspaper which he published. In 1889, he and hisdaughter Eliza published another monthly paper called the 'GamewellRacket'. John Houck was also an amateur archaeologist who examinedIndian sites near Brown Mountain Beach. He bore a scar from a Civil War injury on his head. (According to NorthCarolina Troops, 1861-1865, he was wounded, captured, and hospitalized atGettysburg. 'Was conspicuous for his gallant conduct in everyengagement.' ) Descendants have told me that this injury caused him someproblems with his vision in later years. He was born on 13 April 1845 at
Caldwell Co., North Carolina. He was the son of

Rosa Lee Jones on 14 August 1901. John Marion Houck died on 11 August 1933 at
