Harriet was born at
Drew Co., Arkansas, on 8 November 1868. She was the daughter of
Robert Cornelius Knox and
Elizabeth "Lizzy" Densmore McCain. She married
John English "Jack" Shell on 10 October 1889. Harriet "Hattie" Jane Knox died on 13 September 1941 at age 72. She was New Tag Funeral announcement from an unknown newspaper:
"MRS. HATTIE KNOX SHELL FUNERAL HELD SUNDAY
Another of Monticello's beloved life long residents succumbed at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joe Shelton, on Saturday, September 13 following a critical illness which had lasted ten days. She had not been in good health for a number of years but up until ten days ago when she suffered a stroke of paralysis she was able to be up and about.
She was born November 8, 1868 in Monticello, the daughter of the late R.C. and Elizabeth Knox prominent Drew Countians.
She was married early in life to J.E. Shell, who preceded her in death by several years.
She was a member of the Methodist Church and for forty years she had served the Monticello church unselfishly and well. She was motivated throughout her life by Christian principles and she went her unassuming way rendering acts of Christian service and of love. She was a faithul member of the Missionary Society and of the W.C.T.U. Those who knoew her best spoke of her as a true friend and higher praise can be given no one.
She is survived by an only daughter, Mrs. Joe Shelton, the former his Annie Shell, one brother, G.A. Knox, of Harrisburg, and one sister, Mrs. A.B. Bell of Sheridan. Three grandchildren, Jack Shelton, Minden, La., Joe Shelton, Jr., of Little Rock, and Dick Shelton of Monticello also survive.
Funeral services were held at 3:30 Sunday afternoon from the Stephenson Funeral Home conducted by Rev. J.M. Hamilton and Rev. W.B. Healy. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery."

Oakland Cemetery, Monticello, Drew Co., Arkansas.
