Robert was born at Coleraine, Co. Antrim, Ireland, in 1746. He married Margaret Elisabeth Wilson before 1776. Robert died on 29 April 1806 at Chester Co., South Carolina. His body was interred in 1806 at Chester Co., South Carolina, at Fishing Creek Presbyterian Cemetery.
