He became joint King of Franks in 768 with his brother Carloman, who died in 771. Became King of the Lombards in 774. Crowned as the first Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III in Rome on 25 Dec 800. Instituted an office that eventually became known as Marquisor Marjrave to administer areas at the frontiers of his realm. Made the office of Count a hereditary position, whereas previously it had been an office appointed by the king. This latter move led in part to the down fall of the Carolingtan Empire as the Counts accumulated wealth and power independent of the Emperor. He died in Aix La Chapelle, now Aachen, Germany. Where he kept his imperial court. It was a Roman spa town, renowm for its hot mineral waters. He outlived his three oldest legitimate sons. Had children by at least 11 women.
