Duke of York Richard Plantagenet was born in 1411. He was the son of
Earl of Cambridge Richard Plantagenet and
Anne Mortimer. Duke of York Richard Plantagenet married
Cecily Neville, daughter of
Earl of Westmorland Ralph Neville and
Joan Beaufort. Duke of York Richard Plantagenet died circa 1461; Richard was captured by Lancastrian forces under Queen Margaret during the battle of Wakefield which was fought on 30 December 1460 outside of Richard's andal Castle. Richard was placed upon an anthill thorn, ridiculed and humiliated and then beheaded on Margaret's orders. His head was impaled on a lance and placed alongside the head of his Edmund, who was also captured and killed, over the gates of York.
