Joseph had red hair and blue eyes. The Shigley farm in Ohio was near Cedarville and was sold for $4000. In Indiana the Joseph Shigley farm was 1 1/2 miles east of Buck Creek, 9 miles northeast of Lafayette. He was a deacon in the Wesylan Methodist Church.
Joseph was born at
Harpers Ferry, Jefferson Co., West Virginia, on 23 November 1798. He was the son of
Jacob Adam Shigley and
Rosanna(h) "Rosina" Potts. He married
Mary "Polly" Mahin at
Greene Co., Ohio, on 8 January 1822. Joseph was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census at
Ross Twp., Greene Co., Ohio. Joseph was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census at
Washington Twp., Tippecanoe Co., Indiana. He was directory list at
Washington Twp., Tippecanoe Co., Indiana; In an undated Business Directory, Joseph Shigley is shown to own land adjacent to Henry Franklin. Henry is shown as owning 84 acres, Joseph Shigley is shown to own even more land than that. Joseph died on 15 November 1890 at age 91.
