Graduated from Marshall College, Mercersburg, Pennsylvania in 1846. In 1842 he was Lieutenant Colonel of the 94th Regiment, York Co., Militia. In 1849 he was clerk in the U.S. Patent Office, afterwards he edited the Lancaster Gazette and Farm Journal. He removed to Philadelphia in 1851, where he published the Farmer and Gardener, the Year Book of the Farm, and for twenty years was editor of the Evening Star. He involved with the Board of Public Education, the Industrial Art School, Boys Central High School, and Manual Training School. He was also a member of the flourishing firm of Spangler & Davis Printers on Commerce Street in Philadelphia.
Andrew was born on 13 December 1818. He was the son of
Michael Hahn Spangler Colonel and
Matilda Schriver. He married
Mary M. Shaffer on 10 September 1846.
