The following is from In Memoriam: John Barnett Smith by Alfred Nixon:
"Bostian Bess settled in the foothills on the east side of the South Fork River, below the High Shoals. He built his lone cabin in the wilds of the primeval forest and soon wearied of living alone. After Bostian Bess erected his cabin and had broken the forest, he journeyed back to Pennsylvania to obtain such merchandise as he needed, and to look for a companion. Crossing the great Catawba, he was following to old Cherokee Indian Trail, when about dark he struck the camp of Peter Hoyle and family who were traveling southward seeking a home in the wilds of Carolina. He gave Mr. Hoyle directions by certain mountain peaks how to find his cabin and a welcome to occupy it until his return. Around the campfire Mr. Bess eyed with evident pleasure the oldest daughter of Mr. Hoyle, a girl just blooming into beautiful young womanhood. He did not find a Pennsylvania maiden willing to become his wife and so hurried back, preferred his suit and made Catherine Hoyle his wife."
