John was a Republican.
At one time John was fleeced out of $4000 by a con artist. This story is outlined in an article entitled "Gold Bricks" in one of the Bloomington newspapers. I have not seen this article but only know about it from an e-mail from Judy Landy (

John was born at
Harrodsburg, Monroe Co., Indiana, on 21 September 1838. He was the son of
John Oscar Stipp Sr. and
Mirah Mauck. He married
Sarah Lucrettia Horner at
Indiana on 17 September 1861. John was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census at
Clear Creek Twp., Monroe Co., Indiana. John was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census at
Perry Twp., Monroe Co., Indiana. John was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census at
Perry Twp., Monroe Co., Indiana. He resided at
Perry Twp., Monroe Co., Indiana, in 1909. The Bloomington City Directory of 1909-1910 shows that John lived on RR 4, Perry Twp., Monroe Co., Indiana, and owned 428 acres.. John died on 8 August 1913 at
Harrodsburg, Monroe Co., Indiana, at age 74. His body was interred in August 1913 at
Clear Creek Twp., Monroe Co., Indiana, at Clear Creek Cemetery.
