Purtamia Brake was born on 8 November 1821 at
Lewis Co., Virginia. She was the daughter of
John B. Brake and
Rachel Hyre. Purtamia Brake married
David Sears Rude, son of
Alpheus Rude and
Hannah Taylor, on 20 October 1837 at
Lewis Co., Virginia. Purtamia Brake died on 19 November 1893 at
Bone Gap, Edwards Co., Illlinois, at age 72. She was buried in November 1893 at
Bone Gap Cemetery, Bone Gap, Edwards Co., Illinois. She was New Tag Obituary from the November 1893 "Bone Gap Progress":
"Purtamia Rude died November 19th in Bone Gap, IL, aged 72 years and 11 years. She was born in Lewis County, West Virginia, on November 8th, 1821. She married to David Sears Rude, October 20, 1837. And coming with hime to this place, they entered the piece of land and built a log cabin in which they ever after lived.
Her husband preceded her to the better land 15 years ago. Sister Rude was converted at the age of 14 years and lived a devoted Christian for nearly sixty years. At the time of their removal to this place they stopped with a Brother Shurtleff until they could build their little log cabin. When completed Brother Rude took his young bride to see it, although at that time he was not a Christian, as they entered it he said to her, Purtamia pray. They knelt down and she led in prayer, and from that time until death took her home the family altar has been kept up.
In 1840, the first Methodist Class was organized in this community and she was one of the then that composed it. Through all these years she has been intensely loyal to her church and her pastors found in her an earnest, sympathetic counselor and helper."
