Hugh Reese LOCKETT

Hugh Reese Lockett was born about 1802 in Hancock County, Georgia, the son of Abner Lockett and Patsy _____. He married Sarah E. Woodward on 03 February 1825 in Monroe County, Georgia. Sarah was a daughter of Orran Woodward, who was a native of South Carolina. Hugh and Sarah lived in Meriwether County, Georgia for a time before moving to Tallapoosa County, Alabama. Hugh was sheriff of Meriwether County, Georgia from 1831 to 1833 and Tallapoosa County for two terms. He represented the county in the state legislature for one term, and was elected to the office of county treasurer for Tallapoosa County and served that capacity for one term. He was a tall man, standing 6'9" and it has been said that he wore a stove-pipe hat that made him look even taller. Hugh was afflicted with cancer and he moved to Murphreesboro, Tennessee for medical treatment, where he died on 10 June 1858. Sarah lived with son David in 1870 in Tallapoosa County. She died on 24 July 1885.

Hugh had a sister, Martha Ann, who married Irvin Hunter Woodward. Irvin was most likely a brother of Sarah. Martha Ann and Irvin are buried in Meriwether County, Georgia.
