Edmund Umphress was born in Greene County, Georgia on 11 October 1811. He was the son of John Umphress of Greene County and was a descendant of Uriah Umphress, a native of Virginia. When Edmund was four years old, his father died, and when he was six years old, his mother died. He was taken in by William Knowles and carried to western Georgia, where Edmund married Sallie Sarah Canada in Meriwether County, Georgia on 12 January 1837. She was born on 20 May 1815. They moved to Tallapoosa County, Alabama and were found in 1850 living beside Samuel and Mahala Porch Gray and in 1860 living beside Columbus B. and Amanda Gray. Sallie Canada was the daughter of Jesse Canada, originally of Virginia. Edmund served in the Florida Indian Wars. Sallie died on 27 February 1880 and Edmund married Mary ______, who died on 05 August 1885.

Edmund died on 08 April 1889. Edmund and his two wives are buried in the Canada-Threadgill Cemetery, south of Dadeville, Alabama. Sallie was a sister of Edward J. Canada.

NOTE: Tabitha and Jesse both have 1858 as birthdate on their tombstones, and being as they are not at least 9 months difference between these two dates, I have to assume one of them is wrong.
