Family
Group 1
The
Descendants of Capt Thomas (I) Osborne of Henrico Co., VA, b Abt 1580 in
Of the 12 people in this Family Group 1, Maynard
has a conventionally documented connection to Capt Thomas Osborne, b 1580, who
came to Henrico Co., VA, in 1619 on the ship Bona Nova. See the web site <http://www.virginians.com/redirect.htm?topics&o>
for more on Capt Thomas Osborne and his family. Thanks to research by Tony and Maynard, we have a
good idea of how everyone in this family group except Van connects to this
line and are trying to find more explicit documentation. Below are the documented descendants from
Capt. Thomas Osborne to Maynard and the believed
descendants to everyone else except Van.
Van’s ancestral line is shown separately because there is much less
known about it. See the discussion of
his line preceding his listing. Jeffrey P Osborne and Felipe Osborne Shea who
were previously shown in this FG1 have been moved to a new FG20 because of
the results of Felipe’s 25 marker test.
See also the FG20 page. All but Peter C, Ronald E, and Harold T share the
common ancestor Thomas (V) Osborne.
Peter, Ronald, and Harold share the common ancestor Thomas
(III) with the rest of the family group.
Note that Frank is a first cousin of George’s father, and there are
only 5 mutation opportunities between Frank and George, so the 12 marker
match would be expected, and it is also likely that they would match on a 25
marker test, although neither is certain because mutations can occur at any
generation. Descendants of Thomas (I) (Capt)
Osborne
(Underlined names in bold are
links to their listing on the Osborne Origins web site.) (Lines in green are those with the most likely ancestral haplotype
on 12 or 25 markers; lines with other colors have one mutation different from
the ancestral haplotype somewhere in that part of the line with a different
color. See the Alleles Table) 1 Thomas

NOTE 01:
Joseph Martin Osborne only has his line positively documented back to Priscilla
Osborn b: 1804 in SC, m: Nov 18, 1817, Jackson Co., GA. d: 1875 in Pike Co.,
AR. who was married to John Osborn b:
Abt. 1802 in Gwinnett Co., GA.
Priscilla is shown on Osborne Origins as the daughter of William
Osborn. The manuscript we have from
McLaurin shows that Brittian, son of Edward Osborne, was in Gwinnett Co., GA
in 1810, but unknown thereafter.
Brittian had a brother William which may be
the father of Priscilla, making John and Priscilla first cousins, which would
agree with family lore in Josephs family.
Since it is therefore quite likely that Josephs
connection to this Osborne line is through Brittain, I have shown that
connection even though IT IS NOT PROVEN.
The POSSIBLE ancestral line of Van Clayton
Osborne is shown below. Van only knows
his ancestors back 3 generations to his great-grandfather. However, his great-grandfather’s name,
Repts Barnes Osborne is a very strong clue to how his known line may connect
to the Capt Thomas line above. The
name Reps is a very unusual name, but appears many times in particular lines
of the Capt Thomas descendants, such as generation 6 in Maynard’s ancestral
line above. The Reps Osborne in
Maynard’s line had a known son, Reps Jr. Osborne, b Abt 1757, m Rebecca
Goode. Reps Jr.’s next older sister,
Ann Osborne, married Francis Barnes, and they had a known son named Reps
Barnes. So it is likely that the name
Reps Barnes carried down from Reps Jr to Van’s grandfather. However, for this to be true, given the
known birthdates, there would have to be several missing generations. The ancestral line below makes some
estimate of the missing generations and is a plausible connection from Van to
Capt Thomas, but is shown separately because so much is missing. POSSIBLE Ancestors of

15 Clayton Ray Osborne Technical details
Note:
The following
discussion is quite old and out of date, but I leave it in for reference purposes. Much of this methodology has been
superceded by the FTDNATip probabilities discussed elsewhere. To compare the 25 marker
genetic distance inferences of these lines to the believed ancestral lines
from conventional genealogy, I used the mutation rates determined by John
Chandler, from the DNA Mailing list, as follows. John Chandler has calculated based on a
survey of results of available family groups, that the mutation rate for
"fast" markers (the ones in red) is .0041+-.0008; and that the rate
for "slow" markers (the ones in black) is .0013+-.0003. Maynard and Thomas differ
1 place in two of the red "fast" markers, 464c and d, on the 25
marker test. Next, I used a MRCA
calculator (Most Recent Common Ancestor) by Ann Turner <[email protected]>,
past administrator of the DNA list, to calculate the MRCA for Maynard and
Thomas using the .0041 fast marker mutation rate. The results are a median of 13.6
generations (that's at the 50% confidence level) with 95% confidence levels
between 3.1 and 36.8 generations.
Below are the results from the MRCA calculator for a mutation rate of
.0041: Number of Generations to Most Recent Common Ancestor
The MRCA calculation by John Chandler also has a rule that you take the sum of the squares of
the differences at each marker, and multiply by 125 years for fast
markers. For Thomas and Maynard, that
is 1 squared plus 1 squared = 2 times 125 = 250 years back to the common
ancestor. The end result is that the common ancestor median probability of
number of generations is 13.6 and should be about 250 years ago (with a large
uncertainty). Finally, I looked at how we are related assuming our hypothesis is
correct. Thomas is down 10 generations
from the MRCA Thomas (V) Osborne and Maynard is down 8, so our common ancestor
would be 10 generations back, and since he was born about 1690, that's about
244 years before Thomas and Maynard’s birth dates. These results are well within the above
expectations of the DNA testing. The same procedures for Lecil vs. Maynard give a median of 8.4
generations from Ann Turner’s calculator, and 9 from the U of Arizona. Lecil and Maynard are more closely related
so the closer genetic distance is consistent with that. George’s result of a genetic distance of 1 from each of the other
three people is somewhat unexpected, but is consistent with our presumed
relations. One might have expected
George to match Lecil better, since their presumed common ancestor is only 6
and 5 generations back respectively, but dna testing is just not accurate
enough to make that distinction. It is
interesting that Thomas is the only one who differs on Allele 449; the other
three differ only on Allele’s 464a and b.
Everyone differs only on the “fast” markers. Migration
Some of the migration paths for this family can be seen in the
birthplaces for the lines above.
Maynard and Peter C’s lines stayed in VA. Harold’s line also stayed close to VA and
only migrated into NC in the latest generations. Some descendants of Thomas (V) migrated to
SC in the vicinity of Laurens Co.
Thomas’ line migrated from Lauren’s, SC into western KY in the
Caldwell Co., area and then into southern IL.
Lecil’s line migrated into GA.
George’s line migrated into GA and then into Contacts

With the 37 marker results of
4 people, we are now able to deduce the most likely 37-marker Ancestral
Haplotype (also called the Ancestral Result) of this family group. Simply put, that means we can deduce the
most likely allele values for our common ancestors, Thomas (III) Osborne and
Thomas (V) Osborne. It turns out that FTDNA has a discussion of the
significance of the Ancestral Haplotype and also a method for it’s derivation
in it’s Facts and Gene’s newsletter at the web site: http://www.familytreedna.com/facts_genes.asp?act=show&nk=2.9
in the section “Interpreting Results: Determine the Ancestral
Result”. However, their method requires that two
people match identically on a 25- or 37-marker test, which is difficult to
achieve. Since mutations are rare, and
happen independently on each allele, it is unlikely that two people of
diverse ancestry will have the same mutation on the same allele. Therefore it is possible to make an
estimate of the most likely Ancestral Haplotype by taking the
predominant value for each allele for each of the people tested. This is valid provided that the group is
diverse and is not weighted by several people of very close ancestry, which
is the case in this group. The table
below shows how we can apply this “majority vote” method to this group.
By taking the predominant
value of each allele, we get the sequence identified as the Likely Ancestral Haplotype, and note
that it is the same as that of |
