Allott, Harry
|
Henry Allott, who was known as Harry,
was born at Thurmaston on the 27th September 1900, and
baptised at the parish church on the 4th November 1900.
He was the son of Joseph Allott, a framework-knitter,
and his wife Elizabeth, née Smith.
The Allott family lived in a house on
Thurmaston's Main Street. The children of Joseph and Elizabeth
Allott were Emily, Wilfred, Ernest,
Evelyn, Willie, and Harry, all of whom were born
in Thurmaston.
The photograph of Harry Allott
is the only evidence to show that he served in the army
during the Great War. It is believed, based on the appearance
of his cap badge, that he served in a battalion of the
East Lancashire Regiment.
After the war Harry lived with
his parents at 94, Main Street, Thurmaston. In 1927 he
married Elizabeth Jones and for some time he and his wife
lived at the family home. At the oubreak of war in 1939
Harry and Elizabeth were living at 1, Goldhill,
Leicester, with their two children, a son and daughter.
Harry was a cane furniture maker.
Harry Allott passed away in Leicestershire
during the latter part of 1981.
His parents are interred in Thurmaston
Cemetery.

Ballard, Thomas Edward
|
Thomas Edward Ballard was born in the
parish of Birstall, Leicestershire in around 1880. He
was the son of Edward Ballard, a bricklayer's labourer,
and his wife Elizabeth.
The Ballard family became settled in Thurmaston
in around 1886, and by 1891 were living in Canal Street,
with the head of the family, Edward Ballard, working as
a market gardener. However, by 1901 Edward Ballard had
become a licensed victualler and kept the Barkby Arms
at 125, Bedford Street, Leicester. Thomas Edward, who
was working as a basket maker, lived with his parents
at the public house.
By 1908 Edward Ballard and his family
had moved back to Thurmaston where he took on the license
of the Black Horse on Main Street. However, Thomas
Edward Ballard, who had been married for three years,
was working as a farm labourer, and living at 26, Cooper
Street, Leicester, with his wife, Edith, nee Mayes, and
daughter Edna.
By the beginning of December 1915 Thomas
Edward Ballard was back in Thurmaston, and living at 15,
Church Street. It was on the 6th December 1915 that he
joined the ranks of the Leicestershire Regiment, and was
attested to the regiment on the 7th June 1916.
Perhaps because of his age and marital status, Private,
238161, Thomas Edward Ballard saw no overseas service.
In June 1917 he was transferred to an agricultural company
of the Labour Corps. On demobilisation he was transferred
to Class "Z" of the army reserve. He informed
the army authorities that his home address remained at
15, Church Street, Thurmaston.
His younger brothers, Ernest William Ballard
(q.v.) and Joseph Ballard (q.v.), and Fred Archibald Ballard
(q.v.) also served their country during the Great War.
Thomas Edward Ballard died in 1956.

Bree,
James Edward
|
James Edward Bree was born in Leicester
on the 1st November 1884. He was the son of James Bree
and his wife Mary Ann, nee Russell. In 1901 James Edward
lived with his parents, and younger siblings, Herbert,
Ernest and Annie, at 103, Brook Street, Leicester. James
Edward was then an apprentice shoe machinist.
On the 21st May 1907 James Edward married
Clara Smith (born 2nd February 1884, Leicester) at St.
Matthew's Church, Leicester. On the 29th April 1908, at
Leicester, Clara gave birth to a daughter, who was named
Clara Ellen. In 1911 James Edward, and his wife and their
daughter, lived at 56, Brook Street, Leicester, part of
which was a confectionary shop, which was run by James
Edward's wife. James Edward's young sister, twelve year
old Annie Bree, also lived at Brook Street. In 1911 James
Edward was working as a boot laster. A son, Stanley Harold,
was born at Leicester on the 4th June 1913.
James Edward Bree joined the army in Leicester
on the 26th March 1915; he signed up for a service term
of four years with the Territorial Force. His enlistment
followed a medical examination, after which he was immediately
approved to serve with the 4th Battalion of the Leicestershire
Regiment. James Edward became Private, 4302, J. E. Bree.
Having joined the army James Edward left
behind his wife and children, who were living at 7, Ullswater
Street, off Jarrom Street, Leicester. Once he had enlisted
James Edward immediately began his military training.
Just a short time into his training he was transferred
to the 3/4th Battalion of his regiment. On the 24th July
1915 he was appointed as a Lance Corporal, but was deprived
of his stripe just over four months later.
On the 17th April 1916 he was transferred
to the 1/4th Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment,
which was an active service unit. Two days later he was
landed in France. He returned to England on the 27th June
1916, probably on account of being injured. Later in the
year, on the 29th August 1916, he was posted to the regiment's
command depot at Ripon. This was followed by a transfer
to the 4th Reserve Battalion on the 8th December that
same year.
On the 2nd March 1917 Private Bree was
returned to the 1/4th Battalion, and was disembarked in
France the following day. Nineteen days later he was posted
to the 7th Battalion. On the 16th July 1917 Private Bree
suffered a gunshot wound to the head, as well as the effects
of concussion. At the time James Edward was wounded the
Brigade, of which his battalion was part, was in the 21st
Division's reserve, in what was known as the Tunnel Sector,
near Bullecourt. James Edward would have been treated
at a Casualty Clearing Station, and at a General Hospital,
before being returned to England on the 26th July. The
fact that James Edward had received a Blighty one - a
serious injury - meant that he would not have to endure
the coming fight of his battalion at Polygon Wood. During
1917, due to renumbering of the soldiers of the Territorial
Force, James Edward became Private, 201112, J. E. Bree,
Leicestershire Regiment.
On his return to England James Edward
joined 'D' Company of the 4th Reserve Battalion of the
Leicestershire Regiment, from which, from the 1st February
1918, he was granted eleven days' leave to his see his
family, who were then living at 215, Grasmere Street,
Leicester, just a short distance from their old home.
In May it was confirmed that James Edward's injuries had
reduced his medical classification from A1 to B2. So,
on the 3rd September 1918, James Edward was transferred
to the 504th Home Service Employment Company of the Labour
Corps, but eleven days later was posted to the 506th Home
Service Employment Company. On leaving the Leicestershire
Regiment James Edward was renumbered Private, 643275,
J. E. Bree, Labour Corps.
The war effectively ended on the 11th
November 1918. On the 18th February 1919 James Edward
was discharged from the army at Nottingham. His conduct
on being demobilized from the army was recorded as very
good. He informed the army authorities that his home address
was 215, Grasmere Street, Leicester. He was granted a
temporary weekly allowance of 8/3d on account of having
received an injury to his side and the gunshot wound to
his head, which was judged to have reduced his capacity
to work by 30%. In December 1919 he was awarded the Silver
War Badge in recognition of his Services Rendered, and
the wounds he had received during his war service. After
the war James Edward was awarded the British War Medal
and the Allied Victory Medal.
On the 27th June 1929 James Edward's only
son, Stanley Harold Bree, died aged 16 years. He was buried
in Thurmaston Cemetery.
During 1931 James Edward's and Clara's
surviving child, Clara Ellen, married Jack
Hegginson. Jack and Clara
had two children. In 1939 James and Clara Bree lived at
53, Manor Road, Thurmaston. James was then employed as
an instructor of shoe machines in a footwear company's
lasting department.
James Edward Bree passed away on the 4th
January 1963 and was interred in the same grave as his
son. His widow, Clara, died on the 21st October 1967 and
was buried with her late husband.
The photograph of James Edward Bree was
taken in later life.
