Saddington, Baden Powell

 

Baden Powell Saddington was born in Thurmaston on the 9th May 1900 and baptsied at St. Michael and All Angels Church on the 30th.June 1900. He was the son of William Saddington, who worked as a stoker in a hosiery factory, and his wife Bertha Ann, nee Wright. When Baden was born the Saddington family lived at a house in Reading Street, Thurmaston.

In 1911 Baden was living with his parents at a house on Main Street, Thurmaston.

In 1918 Baden was serving with the 53rd (Young Soldier) Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment. He was given training at Rugeley Camp, Staffordshire, and Thoreseby Hall Camp, Nottinghamshire. The 1918 Armistice was announced before Baden was called upon to serve overseas. Baden served as Private, TR/6/40250, B.P. Saddington.

After beimg discharged from military service Baden returned to his parents' houise on Main Street, Thurmaston.

In 1930 Baden married Frances Mary Wright of Thurmaston. The couple had one child. In 1939 the family lived at 6, Reading Street. Baden worked as a coal merchant.

Baden Powell Saddington died on the 19th July 1985.

Baden Powell Saddington's elder brothers, William Saddington, John Tom Saddington and Harry Saddington, served in His Majesty's Forces during the Great War. His nephew Thomas William Saddington served during the 1939-1945 War.

Harry Saddington's elder brothers, William Saddington and John Tom Saddington, and younger brother, Baden Powell Saddington, served in the army during the Great War. His nephew Thomas William Saddington served during the 1939-1945 War.

John Tom Saddington was born in Leicester on the 7th May 1890 and baptsied at St. Andrew's Church, Leicester, on the 18th.June 1890. He was the son of William Saddington, a labourer in a weaving factory, and his wife Bertha Ann, nee Wright. When John Tom was born the Saddington family lived at 4, Court B, Outram Street, Leicester.

When John Tom was an infant he lived with his parents at 21, Deacon Street, Leicester. However, by 1901 the Saddington family were living at a house in Reading Street, Thurmaston. John Tom's father worked as a stoker in a factory. In 1911 John Tom was employed as a brickyard labourer.

In 1911 John Tom married Lucy Mary Fuller, the daughter of Thomas and Bertha Fuller of Thurmaston. The couple had a large family - Kate, b.1912, d.1912; Beatrice Lily, b.1913; Ethel May, b.1915; Bertha E., b.1920; Margaret L., b.1922; Thomas William, b.1923; Rose E., b.1924; Adeline A., b.1927; and Harry, b.1929.

During the Great War John Tom served as Private, 31603, J. T. Saddington of the Leicestershire Regiment. On the 29th October 1917 Private Saddington, then serving with the 6th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment, part of the 110th Leicester Tigers Brigade, was given medical treatment by the 14th Field Ambulance. He had suffered the effects of a gas attack. The following year he was wounded in the left hand and, subsequently, on the 23rd March 1918, he was admitted into the 18th General Hospital at Camiers. His treatment in the hospital lasted for four days. At the time Private Saddington was injured he was attached to the 110th Brigade's Trench Mortar Battery, which was in action at Ephey.

After the war John Tom Saddington received the British War Medal and the Allied Victory Medal in recognition of his overseas service with the army. After the war he worked as a coal merchant.

In 1939 John Tom lived with his wife and four of his children at 3, Victoria Street, Thurmaston. He had given up his job as a coal merchant on account of being disabled.

John Thomas Saddington died on the 4th December 1949 and was interred in Thurmaston Cemetery. His widow, Lucy, passed away on the 24th April 1957 and was buried with her late husband.

His elder brother William Saddington served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the Great War. His younger brothers, Harry Saddington and Baden Powell Saddington, also served during the war. His eldest son, Thomas William Saddington, served during the 1939-1945 War.

 

Saddington, William

William Saddington was born in Leicester on the 31st October 1885, the son of William Saddington, a labourer, and his wife Bertha Ann, nee Wright. .

When William was an infant he lived with his parents at 21, Deacon Street, Leicester. However, by 1901 the Saddington family were living at a house in Reading Street, Thurmaston. William's father worked as a stoker in a factory.

On the 1st March 1911 William Saddington, and his younger brother, Simon Harry Saddington, having left the family home on Thurmaston's Main Street, boarded the passenger ship S.S. Adriatic at Southampton. The ship sailed for the United States of America, and the two brothers disembarked in New York on the 10th March 1911. Their intended place of stay in New York was the Smith's Star Hotel on Clarkson Street.

On the 8th August 1914 Britain declared war on Germany, and on the 7th November 1914 William Saddington, who was then working in Canada as a locomotive fireman, joined the ranks of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF). William was already serving with the 90th Rifles (Militia) when he joined the army.

William became Gunner, 86462, W. Saddington, of the 17th Battery, 5th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery. He arrived in England with his unit on the 18th August 1915. He was embarked for France on the 16th January 1916. Whilst on leave in England, on the 23rd June 1917 William married Lily Perkins at St. Mark's Church, Leicester.

On the 1st October 1917 William was appointed as an Acting Bomardier. In November 1917, whilst serving at Passchendaele, he suffered the effects of gassing. In the following year he was blinded by gas and on the 9th April 1918 he was was admitted to the 6th British Red Cross Hospital, Etaples. He recovered his sight after five weeks. He was eventually returned to England, and sent to the 5th Canadian General Hospital, Liverpool, before being invalided back to Canada on the 30th October 1918.

As Sergeant, 86462, W. Saddington, he was admitted into the Manitoba Military Hospital, Winnipeg, on the 29th November, 1918 and discharged from the same on the 12th December 1918 - seven days later he was discharged from the army at Winnipeg, assessed as medically unfit on account of heart problems.

William's wife Lily returned to Canada and the couple lived in Kenora, Ontario. William Saddington passed away on the 6th April 1966.
