Bio Albert Meriwether
Albert Meriwether was born In Virginia In 1803. In 1850 he and his wife, Catherine (believed to be a
second wife), were living In Hickman County, Kentucky and their children still at home were: W. W., 1833;
Robert,1835; Hannah, 1837; M. C,1840; 1 D., 1844; S. C, 1846; and H. W.,1849. All these children were born
In Kentucky. Catherine, wife of Albert, was born In Virginia In 1811.
A great deal of detailed information regarding the Meriwether family In America may be found in the
book entitled "The Meriwethers and Their Connections". This work was written by Nelson Heath Meriwether.
According to Mr. Meriwether, the initials(W. W., M. C, J. D., S. C, and H. W.) stood for William Winston,
Mariah Catherine, James David, Sarah Chew, and Harriet Winslow respectively. A copy of this volume may
be found in the Public Library at Jonesboro, Arkansas.
It is believed that the Meriwether family came to Paragould sometime during the 1880's. William
Winston Meriwether established the Meriwether Hardware Company, one of the most prominent mercantile
firms in the City. As of 1916 this company was located at 212-216 South Pruett. Robert W. Meriwether was
president of the company at this time. Robert W. and his wife, Kate, lived at 305 South Third during this
period.
A personal item regarding the Meriwether family was carried in the Aug. 2, 1922 issue of the Paragould
Soliphone. This item indicated that Robert W. Meriwether and his son, William, had attended the annual
family reunion held at Dunbar Cave near Clarkeville, Tennessee.
Captain W. W. Meriwether died in 1893 and was buried at Linwood Cemetery. His wife, Sarah E., died
in 1897 and was buried at the same place. A number of other members of the Meriwether families are buried
at the Linwood Cemetery Mausoleum.
